What other apocalyptic stories (books, short narratives, films...) do you know? How are they similar to/different from The Road? Is the author/director trying to teach us the same lessons--or different lessons? You could use The Giver, WALL-E, and/or any other stories you know. This is a picture from the movie Book of Eli, which we will watch if a student acquires it (it's in our library). Write 300+ words today to compare and contrast.

  1. I feel as if The Road teaches you life lessons. As does The Giver, Wall-E, and The Lion King. But yet, they are all almost completely different stories with completely different meanings to them. In my opinion I think the road teaches us about how we take a lot of things for granted. We have food, shelter, water, money, everything we need to live practically. In The Road they do not have any of that, they are fighting so hard to stay alive, but for what though? I feel as if all of us now, have a reason to live, to wake up everyday and make the best out of our day. In The Road, what do they really have to lose if they give up? They are living in such a terrible world where if they run into the wrong people they will be raped and killed just because they are alive. That isn't living, it's living in fear.
The Road to me is like the movie District 9. So many screwed up things happen to people and they get eaten. They relate because they both live and try to survive off of eating humans. They are both disgusting and horrifying I couldn't ever imagine living in a world like that. Living everyday thinking if you run into the wrong person, you'll be raped and eaten. In District 9 they don't rape you, they just flat out kill you right then and there. It's really crazy to see what lengths people will go to, to stay alive. In all the movies I have listed, they all go to great lengths to stay alive and/or stick to what they believe in. Jonas "betrays" the colony and leaves so that everyone will have memories. Wall-E follows Eva and almost dies because he was trying to help them get back to earth. And Scar, kills his own brother, just so he can be king. It's ridiculous what people/animals will go to just for power and/or for life.

Some other book(s) or novels that are similar or trying to tell us/me a message of life. Well I think that The Giver is a good book for a message on life, its not completely similar to The Road but in the Giver it just kinda shows that life can be to advanced for the american people and that things and robots could possible take over they human thoughts/mind. The Road shows us that life could be hell on day and could become “survival of the fittest”. Also the show the walking dead is very similar to the book The Road because in the walking dead there are zombies; cars, homes, businesses, etc. just vacated just like in The Road there is no body and few people that you will come across. Secondly Wall-E kinda reminds me of The Road because in Wall-E they are in a whole different place and people are so called brain washed, well in The Road some of the people brainwash themselves because they don't know what to do with life anymore, there families, friends, neighbors, they don't have anymore its just fighting for life and the reason I say they brainwash themselves if because they eat and rape people and that is not human like to do. Lastly is The Road just makes me realize what if life was like this one day, what if your own kind killed you raped you then ate you, it just goes to show that the human mind changes over time and the environment that we are in truly matters on how we act and how we react.

  3. The Road and the Giver are way different because The Road shows how bad the world can get and that people will start to eat each other if there is nothing to eat. While on the other hand The Giver shows what a world could be like after The Road and that a small group of people could determine your whole life for you. There is always enough food for everyone to eat and no one ever gets hurt. The author in both of these novels is trying to teach us that without stability we will end up destroying ourselves and that we won’t last that long. WALL-E is trying to teach us that we need to take of this earth and that we should not just toss it around however we want too. If we don’t take care of this earth then we will turn into people that are in The Road. WALL-E and The Road are similar because they both show us how the world could turn to trash if we don’t take care of it and respect it. In all three of these stories the author is trying to get us to understand that if we just go through this life with a carefree attitude then someday our selfish and lazy acts of not doing anything to make this world better will catch up to us and we will be left in the dark wishing that we had made better decisions. Pleasantville is another story that gets you thinking. In Pleasantville every day in their life is the exact same. This would be awful if I always did the exact same thing every day but sometimes I get thinking maybe it would be better if we just did the same thing every day and then there would be no murders or rapes or anything.

  4. There are probably many stories that either have the same topic or represent some of the same characteristics. One of the ones like this would be The Walking Dead. Reason being is that it isnt all about the zombies and the disease its more about the dramatic events with the characters and the atmosphere that you can just feel from realistic and imaginary thoughts. For example when a certain character "Merl" dies he was one of the people who wasnt afraid to kill someone. But no matter how much he hated you if his brother was safe thats the only thing that mattered to him. At the end of his life on TWD you start to see a good side in him that unfortunately only the audience can see. He went out to kill as many of the governers people he could and wasnt afraid that he would die. Its just things like that which indicate that the show is not really about the zombie outbreak its about the dramatic events with the characters. This ties with this book as well its more about their story rather than about the outbreak they never say what caused or what happened they just start in the middle with it. Also when they talk about past events that had happened they always go into great detail to try to get you more focused on what happening in their lives rather than whats going on in the current world. Don't get me wrong they do have a lot of things happen to them that deal with what happened to the world but I am positive that its more about the characters life story to emphasize more dramatic events in the story

  5. In every book there is going to be a lesson and each book are different in good and bad ways in the road i believe from what i have read witch is 33 pages i am way behind since i have been sick but in the road it seems like the author is trying to tell us that even though the world is harsh and sucks and its hard to even go day by day there it can brings some terrible messages and good days also like the kid and the coca cola incident but in all reality its just a harsh place in the giver witch i read there is a lot of things similar that she is trying to tell i think in the giver it kind of resembles the road i think the road happened before the giver has taken place and that in the giver she is trying to tell us that being all the same can be and is bad that they control you just like in the road everyone is different and all messed up and going to kill you if they find you in the giver they are killing people also because they are not perfect and people just want to change it like jonas so all in reality i think both authors are saying that both these worlds are hard to live in and in reality very dangerous. Kind of like WallE how that when we just live day by day poluting the world and not caring it makes the world to bad to live in so they go up in a space ship and just live the same day every day and nothing changes until walle comes and basically saves them after defeating that evil robot and that by living this way is very bad i all equally the same message as the road is that the world is harsh and we have it better than what it could be and that dont take your life for granted because it could be a lot worse in so many ways.

  6. Some other apocalyptic stories would be the Book of Eli. The Book of Eli has a very similar ideal. It is about this blind man but in the beginning he doesn’t seem blind but he actually is and uses his senses around him. Another movie I can think of would be The Giver. I think the theme of this is the after effect. I think this because they don't want war again so they control the people. They possibly could have had a nuclear war in the past. I’m thinking that maybe there could be a neighborhood/small city like in the giver in the book the Road. It could be a possible scenario but i am not sure if there actually is. Another would maybe be like a zombie movie of some sort. Like their looking for food and they have to run away from the cannibals and that could be a similar way of putting it that they are running away from zombies I guess. The Road is more of a weird book because there's nothing really like and similar to put it except from like post apocalyptic, not the aftermath like in the book The Road. In the movie Wall-E, Wall-E is a robot that has to clean up Earth because of all the pollution and I guess you could put it that maybe there was a nuclear war and the Robots were made to basically clean up all the debris, trash, and the whole world and I guess look for plant life, well I guess that's Eve's jobs. So I guess Wall-E is part of the Shock and Awe of the aftermath that mankind has once, yet again destroyed and is still destroying Planet Earth. That's just my thoughts about Comparing other books to other books and how I can twist similarity into the subject.

  7. In The Road, you can take the story and relate it to your life. The theme for The Road is most likely related to how great of a father you can be. This theme reminds me of the movie, The Mist because the father and his son stay together no matter what happens. In the movie, they get trapped in a grocery store during a chemically-caused apocalypse and do everything that they can to survive with each other. Another comparison to The Mist would be the child's behavior. In The Road and The Mist, both children are curious as to why the apocalypse has happened and what they can do to end it. Not only do they question how to end the apocalypse, but they also ask how they can end their own lives if necessary. After they talk to their fathers about wanting to commit suicide, both of the boys also want to feel the love of their mother again. The children in the two stories had lost their mother, but for different reasons. The reason the child in The Road lost his mother is because she became suicidal and went off to die. The reason that the boy in The Mist lost his mother is due to health related issues after giving birth to her son. This obviously affected both of the boy's lives in various ways that can be seen in both The Road and The Mist. I also believe that the movie I Am Legend is similar to The Road. They are both apocalyptic movies with only one companion and a plot relating to staying alive for the ones that they care about. In this case, Will Smith's character stays alive to take care of his family's dog that his daughter and spouse loved before they passed away.

The road and the Giver are different in many ways. One way that the giver and the road are different is that some of the things like the road shows how bad everything in the world can get and how much people really want to survive and get some food. Also the giver is way different then the road because they are trying to say that if we don't get help we will end up destroying everyone and anything that gets in the way of the person or whatever is doing the destruction. I believe that the author in both of these stories is trying to teach us the same thing but the one did a better job than the other one did. Also Wall-e is trying to teach us that we should always take what we have because soon we will have nothing to get or nothing to take. Another reason why wall-e is similar is because some of the things done in the movie wall-e could be related to the road in many ways. Also there are things in the giver that show that some people need to show better attitude and stick to what they are gonna do not keep switching what they are doing and get ready to do it and switch again this shows that you are not ready for the real world because most people say they are gonna do something and they do it not switch what they are gonna do and do something else. Lastly these apocalyptic stories are the same because if you put your mind into anything you can do it and keep thinking in that direction and you can do anything you put your mind to. Also i think that if you have goals set in life you will do better cause you are reaching for that goal and if no goals set you are just trying to barely slip past.

  9. I only know of a few movies/shows that are the same as The Road. One would be The Walking Dead. I haven’t personally watched the show, but people I know that have love it. All I really know is that everyone has turned into zombies except for a group of people. Like the book, a man and woman have a child that is born into this “zombie world”. They don’t know what the real world is like. They only know the world as zombies that want to eat them. The other movie that I know, which is also a very cheesy movie. Zombie Land, in this movie there are about 5 “normal” people and the rest are zombies. One boy is trying to get to his parents to see if they are still human and not apart of the zombies. Two girls have always dreamed of going to an amusement park that is in California. On this crazy journey they encounter many zombies, and end up living in a Hollywood stars house. Which he ends up getting shot because he acted like a zombie, scared the teen to death and was shot. There is a big difference between the TV show, movie, and the book. In the TV show, they are hiding from the zombies but they always find them. In the movie the zombies are never out unless you make noise. And in the book we almost never see or even hear about these people. I don’t really think that there are lessons being taught in any of these. It is really just for the entertainment of teens that like that kind of gore.

  10. 1. Some other films I know are the walking dead and supernatural I think that these films could be different and the same because one is suspenseful and the other one is more dark like the book.
    2. I believe that the author was trying to teach us different things in these films even though the walking dead can closely relate to this. I think the in the giver they were trying to show us a different way to live our life but the truth is you can’t always tell people how to live their life. I believe that you can help people get though hardship in their life. I think sometimes people need to find which path they want to take. In the film Wall-e I don’t see it relating to the road as much as the giver can because it’s showing us an unhealthy way to live our life and they don’t really know what earth is. In Wall-e they learn only from technology’ and I believe that this planet that they are growing up on is very filthy and they can’t do anything because they can’t move. I also believe in the road that he was starving the kid because he didn’t want to watch him suffer in pain and he wanted his child to live a longer life. They both knew time would run out and that they needed to find a way to stay safe and away from the bad guys. I think in the road the dad wanted best for his son he wants his son to live a happy life without worry. Although the son would love to have a friend and someone he could call his mom. I think this boy needs more attention in his life because he’s not getting it all from his dad.

House of Wax is somewhat like the road. In the movie there is a group of people that are going to a football game. They all know each other and by night fall they stop and decides to camp out. They smelled something funny in the air when the wind was blowing, like in the road it always has a weird smell in the air. There was a creep truck that pulled up to where they were camping out. Like in the Road when the bad guys pull up in there truck. One of the friends throws a beer can at his headlight and breaks it, that’s when the weird dude leaves. When the dad pulled out the guy in the book. In the movie Carly and falls into a weird filled area in the woods and that’s where that awful smell was coming from. They meet this dude name Lester. Lester than ask to drive Wade and Carly to town to get a fan belt. Well he really freaked them out so they decide to walk the rest of the way to town. I see them two walking into the town I see the dad and son walking all over the place in the book. How cold it must be or how there is no food and they are going to town to town to find food. Well eventually Carly gets taken by Bo and placed under the shop! Well her twin brother gets worried and tries to find her. Well as he is looking for her she hears him talking to Bo and puts her hand up through a vent type of thing. Bo then sees her hand and cuts her finger off with a pliers, he also super glued her mouth shut. Her brother hers her screaming because she prided her mouth open and he came back and locked the doors behind him so Bo couldn’t get back in. It reminds me a lot of The Road because when the mean guy with the truck came and tried to take the boy the dad shot him and he died. Like Nike he tries to protect his sister, he would do anything to keep her safe. I hope the book is like the movie ending were Nick and Carly survived, like I hope the boy and his dad do to.

  12. The closest thing I can think of would have to be water world. It is a desolate world that is completely covered in water, much like the road is coved in ash. There are bad guys called smokers that will come and kill anyone for anything they have. Just like the cannibals in the novel, but the smokers don’t eat people. There is one guy that is a mutant and has fish like qualities, he is a good guy, but all the other people don’t like him because he is an outsider. He is a good guy like the father in the road. He protects a little girl and her mother, until the smokers take them. Then he goes in to BAMF mode and blows up the smoker’s main hideout after rescuing the little girl. With that said, he carries the fire just like the boy’s father does in the road. He reluctantly helps others and doesn’t harm anyone unless they try to harm him. The scenery is just like the road, a dead baron waste land, it has some places where survivors have gathered and created a secure place to stay like a mini city on water. Supplies are scarce and all of the people are living in fear, other than the one dude who is a BAMF.

  13. the only apocalyptic stories I can think of is, The hills have eyes. They find the end of the world. Dawn of the Dead, zombies. the tv show the walking dead, zombie land, warm bodies.
They all relate to The road in the sense of the end of the world. Dawn of the dead or shawn of the dead I think relate the most because that movie goes till the end. I have not read the road completely but I think it will see the end of day.
Warm bodies if a zombie movie, but I think the end I think the world goes back to normal because the zombies find love when a zombie a women fall into love. It relates because it was the end of the world, but since the zombie and the girl start having emotions for each other the zombie the woman meets, his heart starts pumping and so on.
I ask mr C about the hills have eyes and that movie finds the end of the world. Not a pleasant movie, but its a good movie. The hills have eyes relates simply because the end of the world. In hills have eyes they also find a shop like building.
Zombie land is supposed to be a funny zombie movie, which it is. I Think it relates to the road more then the others also simply because there is a end. He finds his Twinkies.
The walking dead is a really good tv show, just never really got into the show. My girlfriend’s mom and brother are obsessed with the show. Id rather watchs movies. The walking dead is like the road but in the road its only the father and son. In the Walking dead it’s a group of people. The road the father and son only have the pistol, the walking dead they have an assortment of weapons.

  14. This book so far really reminds me of a movie called The Mist. The Mist is about some weird creatures that come along in the mist after a strange storm. These creatures are not human but eat humans just like the cannibals in The Road. Another similarity I see is how the in this book the dad is left taking care of the son because his mother has passed away. In The Mist the boy and dad go to the store to pick up some stuff to fix up their house when they're attacked. They can't leave but they later discover that the mother died while they were gone. At the end of The Mist the father, the son, and some allies they met at the store got in a truck and drove as far East as they could to try and find better land or some place that wasn't affected. They drove as far as they could but it was no use. Everywhere had been affected by the mist and they couldn't go anywhere since they were out of gas in their car. Stuck out in the open with no place to go the dad does what he thinks is best. Instead of letting his son get torn to pieces by some monster and eaten alive he takes his gun and shoots him, and the other people. Only problem was their was only enough bullets for them and not anyway to release himself. He steps out of the car and begins to yell for the monsters to come get him but what happens next is not what he expected. The army comes through in big tanks and trucks carrying survivors and people they saved, killing the bad creatures in front of them. This reminds me of how in the The Road the dad thinks hard about doing the same thing to his boy if the time ever comes. In the end of the movie the good guys are wearing masks and on big trucks saving people, which is almost completely opposite to The Road were the bad guys wear masks and ride in trucks full of people that they plan to harm at some point.

  15. The Road and all the others movies and books that we read in the past are a like in away. But I’m not sure that I’m the guy to ask about movies that relate to all these movies and books that we read and seen together. Because of that I’m just working a lot or doing things that matter to me and for other people round me. I think out of all the movies and books that we read together I would say The Lion King was the most relative to me in my life. The book and the movie Eli is great story to the class. I know ever does not go to church like some people in the class but manly this movie or book is talk about if you have faith in God he will provide the tools to get you there. These films and books are teaching a lesion that we may not know it, but you are learning thro it with the help of Mr. C.

  16. The Television show by Jason Rothenberg and book by kass morgan called "The 100".The 100 is about a "space station" sending people back to earth after Ninety Seven years of being in space Because of lack of air in the station. This is also after a nuclear war had destroyed almost all civilization on earth. The two stories are the same because of the apocalyptic aspect in the stories. They are also similar because they basically have nothing to live off of for food. They also have to a point fight to stay alive. The two stories are different from each other in the sense that they are returning to earth instead of being on it already. The book the road is also about 2 main characters and the show The 100 is about 100 people working together trying to survive off of nothing and live as long as they possibly can.

Another book that is similar to the road is "one second after" by William Forstchen
In the story it is similar because it is a book about a father taking care of his kids after tragedies happen but it’s not as extreme as masses of people already being dead. They do not have to fight each other so to speak but fight off Die off stages meaning after how many days are people able to survive for example people on life support in hospitals die almost instantly and then older people in nursing homes die from not being taken care of and so on and so forth. The books are the same because in both of them some apocalyptic event happened but in one second after it was an EMP that destroyed everything. A E.M.P is an electromagnetic pulse.

The Road and The Giver are different, because in the book The Road, the author wrote about a father with his son running away from life, and the Earth was destroyed, but in The Giver, the author wrote about the people living in a nice world, but the people don’t know anything about their past, and the boy Jonas try to get the memory back. Wall-E is kind of similar to The Road, because the environment are kind of the same, the air are polluted, and no living animals on the Earth, the only different is the human are living in the space, and they have things to eat and to live, but in The Road, they almost don’t have anything to survive, and they don’t have the space-ships that can travel to the space. The walking dead is kind of same with The Road, because the people are trying to running away from something, and they don’t have enough food to survive either.

  18. I don't really know of any other apocalyptic stories, movies, etc. besides Wall-E. I think Wall-E, in ways, is similar to The Road because the world is torn apart, not literally. But torn, economy wise because the Earth is surrounded and covered in a smoke/ash filled atmosphere which is way too toxic to sustain life. But the humans are somewhere up in the deep regions of space taking refuge amongst a huge technologically advanced ship. But unfortunately, the humans have become incredibly lazy, and insanely obese. I mean, this isn't even survival of the fittest like in The Road. It more of Survival Of The Fattest when Auto or Otto disobeys the Captain's Orders to return home.

The Walking Dead can be comparable to The Road. In both of the stories food has become scarce. There are also cannibals in the stories. Differences of the stories are it is not a zombie apocalypse in The Road. Also in The Walking Dead there is still animals and the world is not burnt. Another show that I have seen that can can be compared to The Road is Jericho in this show there is a bunch of nuclear explosions in the United States. So this would be the starting point of The Road. The Book of Eli is probably the closest story to The Road. They both have a setting of a desolate burnt world. In both of the stories the characters are both going somewhere following a road. Water and food is scarce in both of the stories. There is a group of people that they good characters have to avoid. Also there is cannibals and rapists in the stories. Both men still have a little bit of faith even after all that has happened in the world.Wall-E is also comparable to The Road. In Wall-E it has the same setting a desolate wasteland. But in Wall-E it is a much more peaceful story than what The Road is. In Wall-E there is absolutely no people on earth. All of the water on earth looks like it has been dried up.

  20. I feel like all the apocalyptic stories I know about are just realist ones and they only show you how to make your self a better person. for the end of the world to come. The movies the Giver and the road are good stories to use that talk about how to become a better person in the old world to pervert the new form of the bad world to actually form. The stories we are reading in class show us how to be the good guys in this world. how not to get sucked into the dark world of a lawless place. The stories show us how to better students better parents just a better person doing the right thing in life I would say. It shows us how we could be living in a world right now that is a bad place but everything is about persuasion and how we look at things is different from how the person next to us looks at things. We are all different but yet most of us know wrong from right but the ones that don't know right from wrong see wrong as being right and right as being wrong but they don't know any better than we know our right from wrong and I tried my best to explain my logic. So yes the stories are working we are slowly starting to become better adults and they stories are teaching us some many new life lessons that we have never leard or never have know.
