fav to least fav characters

andy dufrene- he is smart and has hope, plus he never actually killed his wife or lover

red- I like how he grows in the movie, in the beginning, he says anything to get out of jail but in the end, he just tells the truth and gets out,

Tommy- he tells the truth no matter what, and he wanted to get better.

brooks- he was an old little sad man, I like how he helped the crow

Heywood- he was just a character in the movie, I saw no story or hope for him.

captain Hadley- he killed that one fat guy for pretty much no good reason.

warden Norton- he used andy and didn't tell him to go to trial

bogs diamon- I want him to die. period

1.Andy main character, Red main characters bsf, Warden the villain of the story, Boggs bully, Crooks a lesson for the characters, Tommy a climax 2. Andy’s cell main characters' living quarters escape route for him too. Pacific ocean the place with no memory. Sewage pipes escape route. Cafeteria inmates conversate and disperse stories amongst one another. Warden's Office aka the villains layer also where death took place. Roof top a fond memory for the characters 3. Andy getting beaten by the sisters. Andy helps warden become a millionaire. Tommy proves andy is innocent. Warden gets rid of that evidence that Andy is innocent. Andy in the hole for two months. ANdy tells Red about a place he promises to go to once he gets out. Red gets parole and finds Andy’s letter confirming where Andy is. They finally reunite again. It’s just what came to mind while making the lists who knows why those specifically but they did. Zody

List one: People: Good to bad
Andy- He was the smartest in the yard
Red- He could get things and was one of the nicest people in the yard
Brooks- He was on either side. The reason I say that is because he had a knife to Haywood's throat and he was nice and helped deliver stuff for Red
Warden Norton- He was not good because he denied Andy’s retrial and put him into the hole for 2 months.
Captain Hadley- He killed a lot of people and beat a lot of people.

List two: Places: Places I liked in the movie
Andy’s Cell- Where he got out of the prison
Ex-con Apartment- It is where Brooks died and where Red was reborn into the world
Library- It’s where Andy helped a lot of people and “reborn” the Prison
Rooftop- Where Andy help his friends get a cold one
Zihuatanejo- The finally meeting place for Andy and Red

List three: Plot events: Ones that stuck out to me
Rooftop- Andy helps his friends
Rape- Where Andy tried to fight off the sisters
When Red got out- He spoke his mind instead of what they wanted to here
Courtroom- Where Andy got 2 back to back life in prison
Farm field with oak tree- It is where Andy gave the money to Red and asked him to join him in Zihuatanejo

List Four: Powerful Film angles: Like them
Pawnshop: It showed that Red was looking through the window looking at the guns but he didn’t get one.
Lunch Table: Where andy found a maggot in his lunch and Brooks asked for it but we didn’t know it was for his bird.

1. Places on which Andy has done something impactful (no specific order)
-Andy’s cell, when he makes a hole to escape
-Prison yard, Andy's first interaction with Red to get a rock hammer.
-Rooftop, When Andy gets all of his “co-workers” a beer.
-Rooftop, When he gets protection from the head guard from the “sister.”
-Library, Andy gets a lot of books for the inmates to read and get an education.
-Warden’s office, when he plays music in the intercom for everyone to hear.

2. My top favorite events (no specific order)
-When Andy gets a beer for all of his “co-workers”
-When he plays music in the intercom because it calms all of the inmates because they haven't heard that kind of music in a long time
-When he gets money for the library because he is getting all of the inmates' education and it also shows one of the guards being excited for him when they are not supposed to.
-When Red was able to leave the prison.
-When Red found the note and the money because it gave him hope. He also finds Andy on the Beach in Zihuatanejo.

3. My Favorite characters.
Andy Dufresne- he is smart and has hope.
Red- I like how he grows in the movie, He thought that hope is a bad thing that it -will get you killed.
Tommy- He tells the truth, and he wanted to get better.
Brooks- he was an old man.
Heywood- He was a friend of Andy and Red.
Captain Hadley- He shows authority.

4. Powerful film angles/techniques.
When Red was walking in town and walked by a store there were a couple of guns, watches, and compasses. When he was talking it sounded like he was going to buy a gun. When Red just gets back home from the store and while he was talking he was sitting in a chair, as a first-time viewer I thought that he bought the gun and he was going to go and commit a crime or kill himself, but he didn’t, he bought the compass.

Worst to best characters-

Bogs: What he got was totally coming to him for what he did to prisoners, mostly Andy who was innocent.

Hadley: I wanted to see him sniffle like a little girl, not hear the story about it or off screen

Warden: He calls himself a man of God.

Haywood and the gang: Always bringing an inch of entertainment to the movie.

Red: The one and only person to help some of the newbies in prison

Andy: The guy who tricked the prison and made everyone more holy than the warden and guards

Brooks: He deserved better.

1. Characters favorite to least
Andy- the brains of the prison
Red- the man who knew how to get things and nicest in the prison
Tommy- wanted to help Andy during his trial if he got it
Captain Hadley- shows prisoners who boss
Warden- Used Andy to get rich

2. Favorite places
Rooftop- Andy got his friends some beers and got protection from Hadley.
Library- He got many of the prisoner's high school diplomas and helped them with their flaws (school subjects).
Warden’s office- Because this is where Andy played the Warden by swapping the books and giving the warden the bible and some blank sheets, while Andy took the documented ones.
Andy’s cell- where he did most of his thinking and escaped.
Zihuatanejo- Both Andy and Red got a fresh start on life.

3. Favorite events
When Andy got books for the library and named the library after Brooks.
On the rooftop where Andy told Hadley he could keep all 35,000 without the IRS touching a dime in exchange for some beers for his friends and protection.
When Red went to the Oaktree where Andy gave him some money and ask him to come to Zihuatanejo and help run his business.
The time Red was at the pawnshop and he was thinking about committing a crime so he can go back.
Prison yard because that’s where Red and the guys bet on who was gonna cry first.
4. Camera angles
When Red was walking by the Pawnshop and stopped, he saw 10 different guns and some watches and thought about committing a crime. When Red got on top of the table, I thought he was gonna hang himself because he was institutionalized but he was just carving his name into the wall.

List of people by their mental strength
- the warden has the highest negative mental strength. He knows what he is doing and his actions would be considered bad or actually terrible. He was a criminal as well and he thought he had everything figured out but as we know most of the prison mates knew what he was doing.
-Andy has the most this is shown by him always trying to get everyones mood up since they are being punished brutally. He could just sit back and do as told but he wants to be a little rebellious for the good reason of helping people and getting their spirits up.
-Red is second mainly because he is in support with andy's decisions and his “rebelliousness” to give people a little happiness in their situation.

-Heywood is probably third because he may not be the brightest but he has a more higher spirit than most of the other prison mates. Heywood also helps andy get rocks for andy’s chess pieces.
-officer hadley had somewhat of a weaker mental strength i only say this because he was way to strict on everyone and let the madness of the warden control and consume him. In my opinion if someone else has that much control over your mind it makes you weak mentally.
-brooks in my opinion has the weakest mental strength but for good and legitimate reasons. First he was just a librarian in most peoples eyes. Secondly he tried to kill another prison mate over the approval of his release. The third reason is that his mental strength had been used most of his life in prison so he did not want to keep going and living in the real world, which is understandable for how long he had been in prison and how worn down his mind got from being institutionalized.

4 of the places and how they were either brutal or peaceful and why.
In my opinion the hole would be the most brutal place. The reasons i have are valid for this choice. My first reason is that who ever is put in the hole is isolated and kept away from everyone else, taking away the social aspect that the person who is in there was getting. Another reason is there is no light at all in the hole, which causes a loss of time perception and how the person see because andy kind of jumped away from the light when the door was opened. Plus there is no hygiene in there this is shown when andy comes out without clean clothes and a beard. It beats the mental strength until they are on their knees praying.
-One of the peaceful places is the prison yard because the prison mates get to have social time with each other and build friendships. It creates hope for them because it changes from “when I get out” to “when we get out” meaning they care about each other enough that they wanna see eachother on the outside.- the laundry room was bad because andy got raped by “the sisters” no person should be violated in that matter without the violator getting punished. This affects andy mentally and physically. -The library gives everyone more education and learning is always a good thing. People were never unhappy in the library except for the brooks and heywood situation.

part 2 of my assignment since there were too many characters.

Events that had an impact on characters emotions.
The part when Andy got a harmonica for red was an emotional and remission to his younger self. Red did not want to play it because it had been so long, but his heart was touched by the act of kindness Andy did for him. Another event was when andy was thrown in the hole for a whole month. This event caused the others to feel bad for him and worry because they did not think he would survive that long in there. The promise red gave to andy was emotional because andy meant so much to red that he pushed through his struggles and broke his parole to go see andy. The part when andy told red about “Randle Stevens” created a sense of confusion to enjoyment. This also made red think that andy was more intelligent than expected, even though he already proved most of his intelligence.

Angles and techniques based on intensity
The angle that was used at the pawn shop when red was looking at the box of guns made us worry for him until the compass came in. this was powerful because we thought he was not going to survive as brooks did not as well. The brooks halfway situation made it kind of obvious on what the intentions were when he had a table or chair right under the shelf part of the ceiling, and we know exactly what the prison mates were gonna feel when this got to the prison. The technique of how andy used words on how things have more meaning than they seem to, an example of this is when he spoke about music he said “ music is in here(pointing to his head)”. The technique used in that situation was bringing a shine of light and a piece of good mental health and strength to the table. The director put a character in the story/movie that creates a better atmosphere for the whole prison. Thats probably one of the biggest reasons people like this movie even though it does not show or get as into it as much as that. Andy is so wholesome and the viewers can see that clearly throughout watching the movie

part 2 sentence one"remission" should be reminiscing. two different words with different meanings.(reason for correction)

Tallest Characters in Shawshank redemption (tallest to shortest)
Andy Dufresne
Officer Hadley
“Red”
These character’s actors are 6’5, 6’3, and 6’2 respectively

These are the 10 locations we are first introduced to (roughly chronological)
Andy’s car
Courtroom
Golf Pro’s house
Shawshank parole hearing office
Shawshank prison yard
‘Fresh fish bus’
Shawshank prison
Andy’s cell
Fatboy’s cell
Heywood’s cell

These are the death scenes (ranked by how shocking I found them as well as how sad they made me)
Tommy’s (Tommy was a good character, he was the youngest and had a sort of carefree attitude, sort of like a Heywood in his ignorant prime. It was the fact that he seemed so hopeful but gave up and realized he wasn't as dumb as he thought he was, he regained hope only to lose it to the greed of another character)
Brook’s (Brook was a lovely old man and he was a great character, his story and return to society being a sad one)
Warden Norton’s (I sadly missed this and cant truthfully rate it, so it is at the bottom as I can only imagine with the nastiness and sense of anger that was directed towards this character, his death would’ve been shocking but not sorrowful in the slightest.)
Fatboy’s (The character was just introduced so there wasn't enough time for me to build a connection with them)

Color - Color is used frequently throughout the film, prison scenes are usually dull with no warmth or vibrance to them, having dull blues, grays, blacks, and browns. While when it is a scene that shows happiness or enjoyment, like the beer on the roof scene, there are warmer colors as the sunset reflects off the whites of their undershirts and shine through the beer they enjoy, the sun beaming on their faces as Andy smiles at his prison mates.
Worm Angle - The worm angle is an angle used to show the Warden’s authority and power over Andy and how powerless Andy feels.
Bird’s eye view - A bird’s eye view was used in the conversation between Tommy and Warden Norton to create a sense of unrest and a feeling that they were being observed. This combined with the conspicuous location outside the prison at a late time creates a sense of worry that things might go south.
Dialogue - One instance of good use of dialogue was the dialogue between Brooks and Andy in which Brooks asked for a maggot that Andy finds in his food. Andy's slight sunken face of disgust and his hesitation and well as the smile that sweeps across Brooks’s face leads us to believe he is going to eat it. But instead, he feeds it to a stray crow that he named Jake.

andy Dufresne would be first on the list he was the smartest man there and he convinced the officer and warden that they can make them millionaires. the 2nd would be Red he got all the stuff the andy and anyone else needs. 3rd would be brooks I just like the way he acts in the movie and he almost made me tear up at the last scene. The last place would be the warden northern I'm purity sure that no like him at all but that means that he did his job beside embezzling all the money he did a great job on his part for the place 1st would be the library in my mind I think that the library was the best place to do some of the senes that in the movie the most powerful scene in the movie would be when red looks into the shop and it pans to looking at a gun to a cumpus.

In rough order of who we saw chronologically: Andy Dufresne, Andy’s Wife, Her lover, the judge, Hadley, Warden Norton, Red, Heywood, Brooks, Tommy, Blatch. This is just a basic list of who we had seen in order, starting off with Andy at the beginning of the movie, moving onto his wife and her lover. He goes to prison and meets the Warden, along with Hadley and the other guards. He meets Red, Heywood, Brooks, among other prisoners. When Tommy comes in, Andy takes him in to teach him and give him a high school education, then Tommy tells them all that this guy named Blatch was the one that killed Andy’s wife and her lover.

The Courtroom, the prison, the library, and Andy’s cell. These I listed because I found them to be a few of the most important settings in the movie. The Courtroom is the place they found Andy guilty, which decided his fate. The prison, where he’d be spending the rest of his days for a crime he didn’t commit. The prison is where almost the whole movie takes place. The library was important because when Andy took over the library after Brooks’ passing, he had not only benefited the library, but also the prisoners, getting a lot of new books for them to read, they were capable of learning so many new things. Andy’s cell, this was important because, near the end of the film, we figure out that Andy had been tunneling his way out of the prison with the rock hammer, which finally led up to his escape and freedom.

Ok, so I'll be doing a list of the funniest quotes in Shawshank Redemption. I’ll be ranking them based on how well it’s written, relevant to the scene it’s in, and the actor telling the line. So let's do this!

3: “Same old sh!t, different day” The reason why I put this one is because of how relatable it is. We all had those moments where it feels like you’ve been repeating the same task for who knows how long but it’s on a different day.

2: “What is your malfunction, you fat barrel of monkey spunk?” Frankly, Captain Hadley has possibly the funniest lines throughout the movie, even though he is quite really a huge jerk to others. I’d put this on here due to how the line was delivered.

1: “Lord! It’s a miracle! Man up and vanished like a fart in the wind!” Need I explain why this one is humorous?

-Andrew Colby

list one people: Andy Dufrane - Andy Is smart, talented, and a well-liked person. He is full of hope on how he wants to get out of prison. Red- Red was andy's good friend throughout the movie and showed help for andy and how he has grown from the beginning and how his views changed since he meets andy. Brooks- Brook was the librarian who was happy in prison was a someone but when got parol he was a no one. Boggs- was the main sister. Boggs was the one who did harm to and I put him here because of how much of a bully he was and how he treated other inmates and andy. and last is the warden because the warden was the one who treated andy like trash and only used him for his biding and he was the one who killed Tommy who had evidence about andy's innocents.
