I read the story DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., CHANGING AMERICA by Barbara Radner2005.

In this story, I learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was a leader in America. With his inspiration, he led non- violent marches and protests to help change America. He thought that violence led to problems. He encouraged people to join him in his marches to help America change. In one of his most famous boycotts, called Montgomery Boycott, he helped African Americans be able to sit anywhere on the bus. Before the boycott, African American was only able to sit in the back of the bus even though there was room in the front of the bus. He wanted all people to be treated the same. In all of his efforts, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He gave a life-changing speech in Washington D.C. that changed people's lives even to this day. He was a man of courage and was an inspiration. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was given a day that was meant to honor him. We celebrate this day each year and remember what he did to change America.

I liked this story because it teaches people about what he did. Some people might not know his story and why he is honored. I think that it took courage for him to do the things that he did to help others. We need more of that in the world today. I disliked that she did not give us more examples of the things that he did. I would have liked to learn more about him.

The second poem I read was Humpty Dumpty by JonArno Lawson 2008. Everyone knows the English nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. I only knew part of the rhyme so this was interesting to read the part that I didn’t know before. Humpty Dumpty was written by JonArno Lawson. He was a writer that wrote both children and adult books and stories. In the story, the part that I knew, Humpty Dumpty was an egg that fell from the wall. He shattered and no one could help him. In this part of the rhyme, we learned that he was determined to not get hurt again so he hid under a chicken. This was the part that I had not heard about. I thought about this for a while and could not understand why he would do this and why he would feel safe there. I took it as just part of the rhyme. I read this to my mom, as she is a teacher, and asked her if she knew this part of the story. She had not heard of this either and questioned if it was actually talking about an egg. An egg is what I thought Humpty Dumpty was all about. We did some more looking into this story, and there are many different beliefs about it. Some of them include Humpty Dumpty being a cannon, being a drunk man, and one of them being a man with a hunched back. It is meant to be a riddle that turned into a story. I thought the story was interesting but yet confusing. I wish he would have told us what Humpty Dumpty really was. This would have made it easier to understand. It is weird that he was never actually an egg but that is what we all know it to be. I guess there is more to the story.

The poem I chose when I looked up poems and saw a female's name was called “I felt a funeral, in my brain” and the poem is by Emily Dickinson. The reason I chose this poem is that it sounded and looked interesting so I decided to pick this one. The poem was about how she felt a funeral in her brain and how her brain wasn't working until something that made sense broke through. She said it felt like service was playing in her brain and she felt beating until her mind went numb. She felt like she heard people lift a box and then space began to move again. She felt like heaven was a bell but all was silent. She then felt everything drop and then the poem ended on a cliff-hanger. I liked the poem because I felt like it was interesting to feel like there was a funeral in her brain. Like how funerals feel like everything is moving but staying still at the same time and I think the box stands for the casket in the poem. Maybe she was mourning someone and she was replaying the funeral in her head or she was stuck in mourning and needed help.

I thought trying to find a poem that sounded good or interesting to me that was written by a male was kind of hard. I found that Emily Dickinson's poems really interest me. The poem I found is called “home burial” by Robert Frost. The reason I chose this one was that it sounded somewhat interesting and it's the first one from a male that really caught my eye and sounded interesting. And another reason I chose this one is because it goes in theme with the first poem. The poem is about a man and a woman losing their child and how their grieving process is different for each person. It also shows how the couple struggles to understand each other and their own grieving process and how it causes tension between them. I liked the poem because it shows that not all people grieve the same and how people have to learn to help each other and grieve with them but in their own ways. It shows how people's personalities and their own way of dealing with things can cause tension and struggle between people but it is showing personality.

The first poem that I chose was DREAMS by Linda Pastan1979 This poem talks about how this girl had a dream and what dreams are. She thinks dreams are the afterlife where the children we were and how rocked in the arms of the children we have become. Then she describes her dreams as what it did to her like she said her first one was like migrations as birds whose deaths we learn by a single feather. So basically this poem is talking about her dreams she had when she was younger and describing them as what she thinks they are. I agree with this poem because dreams are like your afterlife that we know because dreams can be scary and dreams can be flashbacks or they can be what happened the day you went to bed and to this day I have dreams like that and it is scary because then I wonder if it is actually going happen in real life to me or wake up dead. I like this poem because I think these things are interesting because I wonder if it is actually going to happen someday or is it just the afterlife of you.

So the second poem I picked was HOME BURIAL by Robert Frost1914
I picked this poem because I saw that it looked interesting to me and that how weird the picture looked caught my eye of a gravestone in an empty field and dead tree too so I thought this would be interesting. So basically this poem is about how a husband and wife grief over losing their child and as the story goes on they both have grieving processes differently over one another and they struggle to understand each other causing problems between them. I disagree with this story because they are fighting over them losing a child and they don’t know who it was so I think that is pretty messed up and then they blame each other and get into a big argument and get mad at each other is not right. I kind of like this story because then you can see how other people live their lives and see how much fighting goes on and blame one another for losing their child that they both don’t know where their child is at.

I read the political theory/info text Expert from the Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli

In this info text, I learned how Machiavelli figured out how to regain power by any means necessary and he thinks that every prince from then to now ought to desire to be considered clement and not cruel. Another thing that Machiavlie said in this excerpt is that if a “Prince keeps his subjects united and loyal, ought not to mind the reproach of cruelty; because with a few examples he will be more merciful than those who, through to much mercy, allow disorders to arise, from which murders and robberies will follow; for these are wont to injure the whole people, whilst those executions which originate with a prince offend the individual only”. Then he brought up the question if it should be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved and after reading everything that Machiavelli wrote in the text I found it to be really interesting that he was the first one to figure this out, but then in the years ahead not a lot of people used this tactic at all because later in time people started standing up for their city and started making a voice for themselves/as a whole. I disagree with Machiavelli because his answer to the question that he brought up can’t be real because you can’t be feared and loved at the same time and no one can make people feel that way about the same person at the same time. What I liked about this text is that Machiavelli goes so much in-depth that he makes everyone think when they read this text.

I read United and Divided: How Religion Drove Politics in Pre-Modern Europe by Shelby Ostergaard

What I learned in this info text is that in parts of Europe there was a series of religious wars going on because the catholic church had split in half and it shattered Europe which then came to the rise of the protestant reformation in parts of Europe. The conflicts that were going on were ended when the Peace of Westphalia was signed, and the nation-state system was born. Then started to transform to what it looks like today but it took over ten centuries to do so from the 5th to the 15th, also during that time frame, Europe moved from a tribal system to the new beginning of the modern state system which changes everything in Europe for the better. Religion was the key aspect of this change around Europe so when they moved from one to the next, the nation-state leaders wanted to ensure that their people would practice the religion that they thought was the most advantageous to them which then leaders encouraged the locals to convert from their pagan religions to Christianity in early Europe. I agree with what was written in the info text because if this didn’t happen when it did the wars that were going on probably would have gone on for the next decade or two which would not have been good for Europe at all and for its people. What I liked about this info text is that it explained all of the details from both sides not just from one of the sides.

The first article that I read was about the “Mexican migrant workers in the 20th century”.
This article talks about Mexican moving to the U.S to work on farms and tell us the experience of them moving to a new place for them without people that could help them and with no one that they knew. The decision of moving out to the U.S. put their safety in danger, but they realized that they could make more money than their home country and make their life better working in the United States so many people started to move to the U.S. to work in fields and farms. But as people that did not were from the U.S. things were going to happen like the Great depression happened unemployment across the country rose to 25%. Many white people grew upset believing that immigrants were taking their jobs. Local government started to report anyone that looked like a Mexican. Life as a migrant in the 1930’s was really hard. Even though agriculture in California depended on migratory workers. They made the lowest wages in the country. Farm owners did not treat them with the respect that they really deserved for the facts of being immigrants. After I read this I really feel myself in this story as when I first came here and how my boss treated me times had changed, but still many things to change. https://www.commonlit.org/en/texts/mexican-migrant-workers-in-the-20th-century

by Jessica McBirney2016

Shut the door speech this article is about in the 20th century the immigration to the United States was stopped from any part of the world. There is an act that they made to make this a law and this act was the Quota Act 1921 prohibited the number of immigrants allowed into the country. The Senator of South Carolina argues that in order to preserve American sources they needed to stop and limit the immigrants. Basically, their argument was that they didn’t want to run out of resources and that they needed to concentrate on their people. They were confused because The United States was formed from so many people from other countries and there was so much diversity that they couldn’t decide who was an American or not. They needed to figure that out. Based on what I read they just wanted to take care of themselves and see for themselves which is good I mean you have to take care of your country and for your families. It might need to be done in order to produce and grow up as a country. I feel that any other country would have done the same. Other people might see this with other eyes and thoughts. But It happened.

The story I picked to read was Dr. Martin Luther King JR. Changing America by Barbara Radner

What I learned from reading this story is that Dr. Martin Luther King was a great leader in America at that time. He always tried to bring peace and freedom to America for everyone in it. He always had faith even when some people did not believe in him. He ever gave up even when he was put down by certain people. He made a lot of changes to America to try to make America better and make it great. He tries to always make things peaceful and wants to try to end violence to stop all the bad problems that were happening. He organized boycotts and he influenced many people. He wrote books and did many speeches. I love the speech called “ I have a Dream”. I think this is one of the best speeches that he ever wrote and spoke about. He made a big difference in the world and everyone in America. I really like this story about him and I agree with what she wrote about him and I agree that he was a really great leader and empack in the world and he was a big influence to a lot of people in the world for sure.

The story I picked to read was Sometimes a Dream Needs a Push by Walter Dean Myers

What I learned from this story is to ever give up on your dreams and to always try to find a way to follow them no matter what. Sometimes bad things can happen and sometimes those bad things may put you down and make you give up on things like your dreams and like the title says sometimes dreams need a little push and sometimes we need a little push because sometimes we might blame ourselves and sometimes we might think that we can’t fulfill our dreams but we must try and ever give up. Like in this story it says that they got into an accent on the road and the son will not be able to walk again and will have to be in a wheelchair. I was also saying that there is a basketball team for people in wheelchairs and how he could join that. Throughout the story the dad helped his son to play basketball even though he was in a wheelchair and he could make his dream come true and he could do what he dreamed to do and his dream did not fail and he got good at it. I like this story because it can help people to have faith and to ever give up on their dreams even when something goes wrong.

2. Write 200+ words about it. Mention the title and author. Summarize what it says. Agree/disagree. Like/dislike. Why?
I found a poem written by Linda Pastan and the poem is called dreams. I chose this poem because I think that dreams are very interesting and I would like to learn more about them so that is why I chose to write about this poem. She starts out the poem saying that dreams are the only form of the afterlife that we know. She then goes into how a dream is like dying and how we only leave back just a little spec of something. It then talks about how the sea is coming up with a long knife glimmering. It then says that the father waits on the beach waiting for morning to heal him but it never does. In my head, I think that that means he isn’t hurt physically but mentally he is scarred for life. I then go on to talk about how the girl dreams about having love in her arms but it never happens. I think that this poem is interesting because it makes you think about the real meaning of what the author is trying to get through to the reader.

3. Write 200+ words about it. Mention the title and author. Summarize what it says. Agree/disagree. Like/dislike. Why?
The poem that I chose to write about written by a man named William Butler Yeats called Easter 1916. I chose to write about this poem because the image they used looked interesting to me and it caught my eye right away. The story is about the easter rebellion against British rule in Ireland. Many people died in this rebellion so that is why it was touching to the author enough for him to write about it. The poem just talks about how the riot was and what happened and the viewpoint he says it from. He talks a lot about how every minute stuff changes and there is so much smoke in the air. This is why i chose to write about this one.

There was a woman that lived on a iland for 18 years and see went back to get her child. And people keeped sing her foot prints some people went to go find her but the never found her. Until the some one found her she had a house made from wale bones and was happy to see the people that have finally come back after so many years. When she got back to the main land. She was famous and she tried telling people about what went on the iland. But when she tried to talk no one spoke her langua.

This was a good poem where it is if you could buy more time. When he was a kid he said none because his days are as meany as the smiles. Then the man asked him again when he was a grown man he said maybe a dollar because im still young and have time. Then he went to the man when he was on his death bed. And he said ten because every day is a purl like a star in the sky. I think that this shows how much a day cost to us and it changes from are age. Just like how are hobbies change though out age to.

For my response, it took me a while to find a story that I could find interesting for me. But I finally found one called “ A child of slavery who taught a nation”. This was very interesting. I was in ah most of the time reading this book and was amazed by some of the things she had done. Cooper was one of the first black women in the country to earn a Ph.D. And also it was said that “If it were not for Anna J. Cooper, the school would not have moved in the direction it did,” says Stephen Jackson. I agree with a lot about this. If it wasn’t for her then a lot of school systems would have stayed the same and not have changed as they did. When they started talking about the school system I wasn’t really interested in the beginning but once I got into the story I became very into the book. This book made me realize what would have been different without Cooper and how we could have simply been far behind our time without her.

This story was written By Ray Bradbury it's an interesting story to listen to when it comes to dinosaurs and creatures that don't exist anymore such as now extinct it starts off with some people paying to become able to go on a tour with guns and they had to pay a fine of $10,000 now with this there are many rules such as when the guide says to shoot you must shoot and when the guide says not to shoot you must cease-fire and if you don't the penalty is $10,000 more and a case on your hands this was put into action to protect the dinosaurs that do not attack and are Leaf eaters in to kill some of the more dangerous dinosaurs it goes on to say that they can't promise that you will survive their only promise is that you will see dinosaurs which seems kind of weird because if I were in that situation I would probably not go on the trip just to make sure that I survive cuz you never know if you would die or survive and I rather not take that chance. I read a little bit more into the story and it expressed how their government has changed multiple laws and rules to protect themselves instead of protecting the people and they express very much that if anything does happen you are not allowed to sue them in any way which kind of shows that you shouldn't probably be doing this if it could lead to your own death.

HOW JACKIE ROBINSON CHANGED BASEBALL
by Jessica McBirney2017
The book I read was about Jackie Robinson on how he changed the baseball comunali when he was young and his father left his brother and his mom. They were living in property they were moving from place to place and their mother would always be working. When Jackie was in high school his family told him that he needed to join a sports team so he played football, basketball , track and baseball. Jackie broke all kinds of records for the high school that he went to. Jackie kept playing sports till he was a junior in college. Even though Jackie played baseball he thought the sport was the weakest then all other sports. Jackie had transformed to the ucla college to complete his degree but ucla had some racial people there. He had all the sports lettere there to complete his degree. jackie went in to the program where only black baseball league but later he was approached by a coach he coaches the dodgers he want jackie to play for him but told jackie if he does there will be a lot of people who would make fun of you and would dislike you but jackile still sign the contract and now he dodgere and would be one of the best baseball player thier and the first africa american player in the league
I lkie this stoey casue it help explain how jackie got to be apart of an baseball team and it the story of his life and tell me what he gone thtrought that help him beacome who he is

The first story that i'm going to talk about is Lamb to the slaughter by Roald Dahl This story is about a woman and her husband and first of all it starts off with them talking and the husband didn't seem very nice to his wife. Then it talks about the husband drinking. She was sowing and trying to talk to her husband but he was being rude to her. I think that this is an interesting story because it shows how alcohol can make you act and how it made him treat his wife bad. After this part of the story he wanted to divorce her and this seemed to hurt her alot but she didn't want to believe it because she treated him so well.
I think this is what alcohol can do to relationships; it can screw them up.

The next story I am going to talk about is Life isn't fair deal with it by Mike Myatt. It first talks about how some people think life isn't fair. It talks about life based on the choices we make and the attitude we have. I think that this is very important because life isn't always fair but we can have a lot of control over our destiny. Life is a lot of what we make of it. We have a lot of choices in life and we can either work hard or be lazy. It also talks about how the hard times we go through will make us better in the end. It talks about an 18 year old that moved from africa and he could barely speak english and he was a cab driver for a few years but then he ended up being the president of a large technology business. I think this story was really powerful because it says a lot that we can usually make life worse or better for ourselves.

For the first poem that is written about a woman named Malala. This poem talks about a girl in Pakistan that was fighting for girl's rights to go to school and also they can't speak for their own rights. Malala is a girl that was a confident girl that spoke about her and other girl's rights to get an education like boys do but it wasn't an easy thing to change that rule, also to make her dream come true. She talks about how her father is an influencer that helped her mind grow and stand up for her and also for girls in the world. Her father also opened a school that Malala attended in the Swat Valley, At that time when Malala was going to school, there was a terrorist group named the Taliban's. The Taliban's doesn't want girls to have to same lifelike boys do so they gave restricted rule to the girls; like what they can and can't wear and also that they have a relationship with if they gave a restricted rule to the girls; like what they can and can't wear and also they can't really go outside without a guy that rule and go out they would get killed. The one thing that I like from reading her story is even though she had a really hard time and even she was nearly killed she just say that gave her more opportunity made her stronger that she can ever be, the reason that I like that is not that much of us in our life can pass something and just say that made me stronger.

The next story that I read is how Dr Martin Luther King made an important change not only to America but to all of the world. He wanted to change the violence that was happening to the people to a peaceful world, so he used non-violence to change the mindset that people had at that time so that people can respect each other and there is peace. He was the youngest person to win in the Nobel Peace Prize. Also, he organized the Montgomery bus boycott. Before the Boycott, African Americans could not ride in front of buses. They had to sit or stand in the back even if there were seats in the front. Only whites could those front seats. It took months, but they won. They got the right to sit anywhere in the bus.

For the first one I read was the mother to son poem. This poem talks about how it is not always an easy life. And the mom had a rough life. She kind of talks about how life will never always or forever be easy and that it is going to get hard at times. But she said that you just have to keep your head up and to not turn back and go the other way because what is ahead of you is more important. I found it cool how she relates it to things that guys do. She always talks about how it Is harder when you step down because then you will have to reclaim back up eventually. For me I think she is relating to a carpenter. Because she says how it is bare floor and there are some places with no carpet. I think it is very motivating how she talks. And this should help her son in the long run. He will have something to look back on this and will be happy. I can for sure see this a paper that he holds on to in his wallet. I absolutely love this poem and am definitely hoping that someday I can do this for my kids.

Second comment-This one I wrote about a guy. This one is the poem one again. In this poem it don’t really have a name. He talks about how he is offering this poem because he has nothing else to give. I think what he means by that is someone else or his family is wanting something but he himself can not give it to them. This poem is very sad because the man is depressed and sad he can’t give something else for them like money. I personally am starting to think that he is writing this to his kid as I read more into the poem the reason why I say this is because they talk about how leading him in the right direction is important and to hand it on as if it was a treasure given to you. This poem to me kind of was making me happy but sad at the same time. Because he was so motivational in this poem but at the same time he had a little of sadness in it. Like he made it sound like that. I would for sure recommend this poem to others. As a reminder to keep your head up in life and make sure that when you get somewhere good you take care of the others around you and are constantly passing it on.

Write 200+ words about it. Mention the title and author. Summarize what it says. Agree/disagree. Like/dislike. Why? The title was “HOW JACKIE ROBINSON CHANGED BASEBALL”. It was wrote by Jessica McBirney. She talked about how he was raised without a father his whole life and how his mom had to work weird jobs and they were always in poverty throughout his whole childhood. Then in high school he did 4 sports which were Baseball, Basketball, Track and Football. He found baseball was his worst sport but. he became famous for baseball which is crazy. He also broke many school records.he became the first athlete to letter in all four of those sports. He went to UCLA which has some of the most racially integrated college sports. But He was still among a very small minority of non white athletes on all his teams. Robinson enlisted in the army but he never saw direct combat. Rickey liked the potential he saw in Robinson, but he had one question. He knew Robinson would face racial discrimination and injustice if he joined the Major Leagues. Could he be a Negro player with enough guts not to fight back. Which is crazy to think about that he needed to be able to do that racism should not affect a sport I think he should of been able to play without being discriminated.

A man can achieve the impossible with his abilities and will even when he is short of resources and has no one to support him. Its kinda trying to say no matter what people tell you and try to say its impossible dont stop trying. You can go from nothing to something big because you got great potential so drive for your dreams. Is what this story means and I think its kind of inspiring and tells everyone they can keep going no matter what.

She fell in love with the minister’s son when she turned 14. He was not chinese he was american. That she did not like the way that her family was acting in front of the guy she really liked and did not know how to react when her dad burped really loud and made some of them turn red. She wants to be more like Americans and not so much chinese because she does not like the way they eat and how they act . Feels like it should be different and that they should be more respectful. She did not like when they licked their chopsticks. She does not think that she is the same as americans. She thinks that is something wrong with being from a different country. She did not know that her mom was trying to teach her a lesson for when she gets older so she will know. She did not think that they would like what they are known for what they eat and how they act after they eat.

People should not be stopped with what they did in their past cause if they want to get a good job like working at a college to make it better for students and to help themselves. Some people think that people in jail should sit there and not do anything to better help someone else or to help themselves. Some say that they are not going to change and then they show them that they can. Then the people that said they could not change then they are proud of them and then they show what they can do and stay out of jail. They are the same as we are and they need to have a fighting chance like we do. Some of them can use their past to teach other people what they will do if they go down the same path. Then they can become better people and then they also can be whatever they want to be if they put their head into it and don't let people doubt them. Then they think that they can't do it and then they end up where they started and then they are back in jail and then they do that over and over again.

It was about two people looking for something they had in common but passed right by each other I think that it's about don't hide behind a mask as there are people out there looking for what you have to offer not the person wearing the mask I would agree with this poem as it's showing about being yourself and not to put on a mask to hide a part about yourself and instead be free of your mask and not hide what you might have in common as you may have something that someone is looking for and you could miss your opportunity forever. I love this poem it's very short and simple as I enjoy things that are like this it leaves more to be said about it as there isn't much to go on but the message is strong letting we know we need to be free of our fake personas we use and instead actually be ourselves.

NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY
by Robert Frost

Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down today. Nothing gold can stay.
I say this poem is about life to me as it's showing around the beginning of our life is our golden years as it'll seem like an hour as we're older we'll see it like that we like to hold onto our youth yet it's hard as we want to keep ahold of it for our golden years are the greatest for us I agree with this as we can't every stay golden and it'll wither away until next year when it'll be golden again for someone.
