The House on Mango Street—due December 16

Select four or more stems from the right of this blog. Write 300+ words about any part of this book so far.

Then, imitate the vignette entitled "Hairs" (pages 6-7). Write in the same style with the same length—with the same literary devices that Cisneros does.

So far, I'm not really interested in the story but we are in the beginning so things might change. I am unsure as to what to write down with the stems due to how early we are in the book. I might go back on this when we get more into the book before really going in-depth and cause some misconceptions about it. So far it's going decently but I personally not a fan of how it's written like The Road which makes conversations very confusing to figure out who's speaking or listening. But it was interesting to read compared to other stories or books I've read.

Now I will try to write some sentences in the style of the story.

My family's hairstyles are varied, my mom's are long, flowing, stylish. My father's hair is usually very short, with not a lot of styles to it. My sisters are long, not that curly, very straight. Mine was very curly, soft, and usually very messy. I am in need of a haircut to at least make me less itchy or have less hair all over my stuff.

How am i a like with the characters in the book the house on mango street first comes first i like how they use there grammar they dont always use it in the correct way i feel that it connects with me because i dont always say things the right way this book also connects with me when they talk about splitting the bike 3 ways thats something i would want to do with my friends.
Whats is the main idea in the book well honesty i don't really know what it is but i can tell you what i think it is. I think the man idea of this book is too show a child's emotion and how hard it can be for kids it shows the brutality between dreams and reality they talk about how there gunna have a big fancy house when they end up buying a big piece of junk it it shows how insecure people are about there houses and how hard it can be to make friends how easy it is to hate on other people it shows that being nice to people doesn't always change the world so thats what i think this story is about what are some problems they had in the book 2 girls wanted a bike but they didnt have enough money to get one so they found a third girl and told her they would be friends with her for 5 bucks so they got a bike out of the deal and they got a new friend problems solved what i dont under stand in the book is way someone always gets shafted shoved out of there spot i don't understand why people cant help people they just go out of their way to make life worse benton meier

What is the main idea of the book? The main idea of the book is to tell multiple stories in one book. To talk about events and memories that the writer has. What are the strengths and weaknesses of writing vignettes? One of the strengths of writing vignettes is that you are able to write about your life in sections. Some memories can be big and some can be just half a page. There can also be a lot of meaning in small writing. Which one is the best vignette that we have read so far and why? I think My Name is the best vignette that we have read so far because we get to know her a little better like her name and what it means. We also learn that her name was also her grandmother’s name as well. I also think that “Boys & Girls” is a really good one because I can kinda relate to her about it. As she talks about having little siblings and can’t really be friends with him/her. I have both a younger sister and brother and when I tell them jokes they don’t really get them so I have to explain it to them. But I can’t really say that we can’t be friends because I do have a good time with them and share laughs. I also have to look out for them to make sure that they are not getting into trouble. They are my responsibility.

My family has different hair from each other. My mom with long straight hair. My dad with short curvy, black hair. My little sister with straight blond hair. My little brother with short, blond crazy hair. My big brother with crazy blond hair. Me with my straight blond hair.

I’m agreeing with Andy on this one mostly because of the knowledge we have on the book as of right now.

And now, me trying to do things

My family consists of 3 people with different hair, my mother’s hair is a mix of blue, brown, and gray because she deals with 3 kids, my brother’s hair is long and brown, and prefers to have his hair grow out instead of having it cut, meanwhile, my hair is a brownish blond and is usually longer than it is now and is on the rebellious and stiff side meaning after a good night sleep, it goes from staying down to being al over the place to where no comb or watered down hand can fix, my hair is a mess to work with and means that it requires little to no maintenance to work with, I’ve decided to live with this mess that I call my hair

How are the book and me alike? The book and I almost share everything to what my family and I go through almost everyday just like the family in the book. The things we go through is encountering slow traffic, terrible parking, and a few people who are jerks. This usually happens when we go out and they’re at work and it’s happening in the book and I just wish it would stop, so we can live in peace and not deal with it. But nowadays people are a little less mean because of this year and everything like that. Whenever I go out today people don’t go slow and act a little jerky to us and everyone we know. If I lived in a different part of the world I bet it would be more cruel because packed areas are always the part where we were a punching bag.

I’ve been trying my best so far to write just like the book, but I’m just not getting it and I pretty much like to write the way I want to write.

This isn’t the end of my writing. I'm going to write one last thing. The thing is hair.

My family's hair that I have to admit is almost the same. Me and my dad’s are a mix-up; sometimes straight, sometimes curly, or both. My brother and mother’s hair are a mix-up just like me and my dad. Their hair is always straight and a little mess. My family’s hair is brown and a little orange at the same time. My family doesn’t always care what their hair looks like or anything like that.

What do you still not understand why she is writing like this? I mean I do and I don’t. I do because it tells stuff about her and she can relate. But also I don’t understand because what is the point of doing this and why did she choose to write it like this. It is interesting how she is writing like this. It is nice to follow along and you can take a break and talk about it before getting where you stopped. Which one is the best vignette, and why? I think the best one so far is the Hairs one because she is telling us how they smell how bad or good they are. It is like you can smell and see what they look like. They try to do this because they want you to feel what they are feeling. Hairs help you understand what they are going through and what they feel like I said earlier. What is the main idea of a vignette? I think it is just to get the point across and to keep the reader interested in the book and all of the vignettes. In what way are the book and the vignette related to someone's life? I think it relates to someone's life because someone could have gone through what she is talking about in the vignettes. The vignette is trying to help people understand what is going on in their book. What do you think causes the writer to like this? I think that she writes like this because they try to correlate to the reader and to connect with the reader. It is awesome that she is writing like this because it is way easier to understand what is going on in the story.

Everyone in my family has different hair. My dad has thin brown hair that he never has to style. My stepmom has long smooth black hair and it smells like whatever food she is making. My brother has hair like my father. I have thick hair and it is not easy to style. I have to comb it every day.

My stepmom always has it in a different hairstyle every day. Also, it is a different color every couple of months. My brother's hair is crazy. Doesn’t matter what he does to it, it is crazy no matter what. On the other hand, my dad’s hair is calm and he can style it. It is really to style his hair. My hair is a mess. Nice and thick, also really hard to style because it has a mind of its own.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of Esperanza? I believe she has many strengths, like staying strong through a tough life in a new place. Being able to withstand the harsh conditions of where they live. She seems to have hope and enjoys having fun where she can get it. Her weaknesses, however, are that she’s surrounded by an environment she’s not completely familiar with, she doesn’t know who to trust or be skeptical of.
What is the main idea of The House on Mango Street? Though we’ve read little of the book so far, I think I’ve gathered enough to believe that the main idea of the story is hope. Esperanza stays hopeful even through all the moving and bad living spaces. She tries to make the most of everything and hope for the best. She appreciates her family.
How does The House on Mango Street tie in with what we have learned before? I believe in ties in because, like I stated previously, The House on Mango Street has a lot to do with hope, like The Road, for example, had a lot of hope involved in it, the boy and father trying to retain hope and survive, is like this story, where Esperanza is trying to keep her hope.
How are The House on Mango Street and The Road alike? Going off of my previous statement, I believe both stories are fairly similar, about family and hope. The family in The House on Mango Street is doing their best to get by, having to move a lot, not being very wealthy. They have to keep hope. In The Road, the father and boy are constantly on the move, fighting for survival, they’ve got little to nothing left. They too must keep hope.

STEMS:
2.) What is the main idea of The House on Mango Street?

I believe the main idea of this book formed up of vignettes is to help inspire the reader. It talks about Esperanza’s (Sandra) life and the different aspects of how she looks at and relates to things in life. I believe she writes and acts like she does in hopes to instill a connection that some other authors may lack.

3. ) What are the strengths and weaknesses of The House on Mango Street?

I believe this book has many overall strengths as it’s very easy for readers to relate to as they’ve all felt similar or the same at some point in their lives. I think the weaknesses are trying to fully connect these stories and whatnot to the reader. It does jump around a lot, even though it is part of the writing technique. Besides this, the author is also of a different descent and hales from a different region compared to a large majority of readers. While some points may remain valid/intact they also aren’t relatable because of this.

4. ) In what way is The House on Mango Street related to The Road?

I believe they are related because Esperanza is forced to continue moving around while in Chicago. She talks about all the places they have lived, but they’ve never really been homes. I believe this relates to The Road because they also always have places to stay, but never a “home”. They all just make due with what they have and continue to live another day.

11. ) What do I still not understand about The House on Mango Street?

While I’ve clearly stated above that the collection of vignettes is somewhat easily relatable, I still struggle to see why the author chose to write it the way it is. I guess if my intent was to write along the lines of a “diary entry” instead of using multiple vignettes. I believe they both could help entertain readers and cause relatable impacts. But I think vignettes are a bit too simplistic to be put into a large assembly to forge a story.

Personal Vignette:
Everybody within my family has their own personal laugh. Not as other people share the same laugh, but as I could always tell who's who by their laugh. My brother's laugh is similar to mine, as we’re both serious people. But when he finds something funny he quickly becomes the most childish within the room. It’s more of a loud joyous laugh that honestly gets old after a while. My mother's laugh is one of my favorites. It’s a very warm and inviting laugh that makes your heart happy. My dad's laugh is another one of my personal favorites as it never fails to make others want to laugh along. It’s always been a somewhat hardy but contagious laugh that never gets old.
My uncle's laugh is funny by itself, as it almost seems fake. He’s always been a jokester so you can never tell when he’s being real or not. It’s a rather boomy laugh that one could never forget. Another laugh that I’ll always cherish is my friends' laughs. Each one of them has a different and very distinct laughter to me. I’ve accumulated this ability by spending lots of time with them and sharing good memories and times with them. We always seem to be laughing about something.
My laugh to me means more than what it simply is. It’s a combination of my parents and family put together. It’s something that others will always know me for and always cherish.

While this book the house on mango street has a different story. That makes the book interesting so page 6 and 7 is about hairs. This is kind of a funny story. It says my papa’s hair is like a broom. This is a funny sentence. While in our family we had different hair. Everyone has black hair. My dad's hair is like ocean waves. And my hair is straight but right now my hair is curly. My sister's hair is long and soft. And my mom’s hair is slippery, black, and a little white.

The main Idea of The House on Mango Street is to get an idea of a house many times she had to move to a new location. It shows us what she had to go through and she had to make new friends each time. She has also had to be the new kid so many times. How are my hair and hairs similar? They are similar because my hair will be different every day. Like the family's hair is all different, mine is different too. What I still don’t understand is why they moved so many times. Like is it because of the parent's job or other reasons? They moved all over the places, they lived in 3 other places before Mango Street. Which one is the best and why? I think the boys and girls chapter is the best because it talks about how the boys and the girls in the family see the same thing. It is the best because you get both perspectives on how a girl sees things and how a boy sees things.

My family's hair is somewhat the same, my dad has short black hair. My brother has long black hair. My mom has a somewhat short black. I have long brown hair.

The book was funny and interesting because on pages 6 and 7 they talk about hair. It was funny why they talk about different kinds of hair in the family. The story says my Dad's hair like a broom. The mom's hair is long, slippery, and little white. for my hair is was straight now it is curly. my sister, she has long, black, and soft. In our family, we have different kinds of hair.

My family hairstyles are varied. My Dad's hair is straight down and short. My Mom's hair is long and straight and soft hair and even my sister has long straight soft hair. My hair type is stylish because I can make my hair go up and down when I feel like it.

what are the strengths and weaknesses of the main character? I think she is smart and kind.

what do you think causes Cathy to have so many cats? I think she is lonely and she is scared of new people

which one is the best? well, my favorite was "my name". because I feel think we can get to more her more and found out what she might not like herself. she doesn't like her name and she wants to change it. I understand that because I feel like that sometimes but it's still my name and I need to just learn to love myself

hair. well, my family's hair is all over the place. my mom has thin, red hair, my dad has brown, thick hair when he doesn't shave it off. my stepdad has brown, black hair, but it used to be blonde when he was little. my sister Kailee has brown long hair, my sister Alania has blonde thick hair, a little shorter then kailee's

1. Which one is the best Vignette, and why? I would say the one about hair because to me I think it's the funniest and most happy.

11. What do you still not understand about the vignette? Is how did people come up with vignettes and why do people write stories like this, I like vignettes but I am just curious.

2. What is the main idea of a vignette? The main idea of a vignette is to express people's way of life and it's a short story of a person.

3. What are the strengths and weaknesses of The House on Mango Street? I would say the strengths would be how the story really has a meaning and can imagine things that you wouldn't ever be able to imagine in a story. The weakness I would say would be how short the stories are but I'm not complaining because there still good.

My hair is like velcro, it sticks to everything and catches onto everything. My mom's hair is straight and very lengthy like a broom. My hair is too long for me to handle so I plan on getting a haircut soon so it can be less lengthy and annoying.

8. Which one is the best story and why?
I think that “Boys and GIrls” is the best story because it goes into detail and it tells us how bad her life is. How the boys can’t talk to the girls outside in the neighborhood. I think that sucks because some of the girls are too young to talk to about certain things or they are not good friends. Esperanza says that if her and Nenny were not sisters that Nenny would be a terrible friend. Esperanza said she would never be friends with her. Esperanza have to make sure that Nenny does not play with the Vargas kids because they do not like them and I think they are mean to them.

11. What do you still not understand about the story?
I don’t really understand why they are really short. I Understand but I don’t because I understand that they are short stories about their life but why do they have to be kinda out of line and have their own titles.

10. Do you agree or disagree with this statement “ red balloon tied to an acher”?
I agree with this statement because I understand where she is coming from. I think that she is a balloon tied to an acher because she has to watch her little sister and she can't talk to any of the boys. She is pretty much on her own because he parents work and she can only talk to her brother if they are inside.

How are Esperanza and Nenny alike?
Nenny and Esperanza are alike because they have the same parents. They have the same siblings/ brothers. They both do not like each other. They both can’t talk to each other about certain things. They both live in the same house. They both go to the same school. They both live in the same town. They both like to go outside.

Hairs
My family's hair varies a lot. My moms hair is long and kinda oily but mostly straight. My dads hair is straight and sometimes oily, it is really short like military cut. My grandmas hair is old, white, and poky like a porcupine, her hair is also short. My sisters is short, healthy, straight and she takes care of it. My brothers hair is short, like a military cut, it is straight and not oily at all. MY brother takes care of his hair also. My hair is not so nice, its notty half the time, it gets super oily and it is straight when I straighten it but most of the time it has waves.
