"Signs & Symbols" by Nabokov—due March 12
React to the story by Nabokov, who seems to be sparring with the reader and the reader's tendencies to hunt for symbols and meanings. The more you write, the more extra credit you can earn.

in the short story i think the parents were sparing with the reader they thought the boy was uncapiles of everything and so they would talk him down to every one meier
I found Signs & Symbols very interesting with the way it expresses symbols and meanings. One big one was the bird. When the parents had gone to visit their son, they were told they couldn’t talk to him because he had tried to commit suicide, which a patient described as “he was trying to fly”, so a visit may disturb him. Right after that, they see a young bird outside in a puddle, twitching. This makes me think due to the story right before that stating that a patient there thought their son was “trying to fly”. This could lead to some connections being made, as I doubt it’s a coincidence. Another thing that made me think was that last phone call right before the end of the story. We have no idea who was calling or why, though there can be theories made from this. There was the little girl right before the end continuing to call them, asking for “Charlie”. So there’s the potential it’s just her again. Otherwise, because they had been told their son had tried to commit suicide before, it could be the sanitarium calling to tell them their son had successfully ended his life. There can only be theories about who was calling.
The birds that are explained in this story give me symbolization of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. What the birds mean in both stories is that you're going to be set free or you're going to be put out of your misery of hell that is in the hospitals/asylums.
to me, the bird was a sign of freedom and life. I think the last phone call was from the hospital saying their son has died. why, because they gave up trying and that would have been the worse time for the call. but for the story, it would be the best because it's sad and pulls on your heart. that's why I don't think they showed us if it was a random person or their son.
