in the beginning, I was scared for a few second and I did not know on what to think of it but after a while, you start seeing what he really is as a person with a big heart but trapped in a body that makes him look like a monster over the span of the movie he was shown as a monster that has no emochon and or intelligence. but sens after sens they slowly show who he is not as a monster but a person a human being. and I like that him getting more convertible and starting to talk to people showing that he nose and teaching people not to judge a book by its cover.

In my personal opinion. The concept of change in The Elephant Man is the perception of views of someone's outward appearance versus their inside appearance. We see how some of the characters throughout the film react and try to understand John Merrick as a person rather than a creature. Through Doctor Treves, we see how someone really does care and wants to help John even though he is heavily deformed. But we see how someone cannot even bother trying to learn who he is, like the nightwatchman and Mr. Bytes, who are the closest thing to the main antagonist for the story but doesn't show up that much, only in the beginning and during the 3rd act of the film. Once we reach the final few scenes in the movie, specifically the theater and John's death is where we truly see people finally realize that he is no monster, but a human-like them.

What change really means in The Elephant Man in my opinion means that you start from being treated as an animal to society and a group of people in the movie like the doctor make you feel more human than ever in your entire life. His story has made an impact on everyone and it also influenced filmmakers to do that concept from the movie and his story in their movies. Other movies that have been used are dark, gothic movies like Batman Returns, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Wonder. The movies capture the same tone including religious themes, circuses, and outcasts like John. The characters in those get the same arc and life from rejection to acceptance although in Batman Returns the character in the movie, The Penguin doesn’t get it and he doesn’t do what John did. All he did was plan on taking revenge by destroying Gotham and stealing children who have been accepted by their parents and society. The Penguin also says the thing that John said by the end of the film but it was the opposite, he said, “I am not a human being! I am an animal!” The first time I learned about change was in my teenage years, and learning about how cruel the world is and what I do to become accepted and everything like that. Change has done everything for me and I’m enjoying it because I’m heading to a path that I will forever like and dream about all the time. I’ll also influence and convince people to do and if my dreams didn’t become a success I’ll still do no matter what.

John didn't really feel like a human in the first scene of the movie. People viewed him as an animal and a freak. That's why he never said anything about it. He was always doing what his owner told him to do because he is the one that will keep him alive. If john talked back and rebelled it would have been bad on his end. John was taken in by a Doctor. John did not talk at all when the Doctor brought him in. As the movie progresses John trusted and liked the Doctor as they got along. Also, the nurses started seeing john as a human being after seeing that he was not a monster but a polite and respectful human being. When watching the movie john has changed his ways completely he felt like people cared about him and loved him. His personality also changed. He was very professional about things. He was not scared to talk to people. All he was really focused on was making friends and changing people’s views about him. In the end, he felt as he has already completed his journey. He had changed people’s view about him and completed his little building. When he was sleeping in his bed he knew he was going to die by the position that he was sleeping in. But he didn’t care, all that he wanted was people to love him, to cherish him, and to tell his story when he was gone.

In the beginning of the narratology, John wasn’t treated like a human. He was treated as an animal and was being used for making money. John was scared of everyone and didn’t talk to anyone. But as the movie went on him started to talk more and started making friends. Dr. Treves wanted to keep him at the hospital so we could study him, but he began to realize he was turning into Bytes because he was showing him off to everyone. The two main characters that didn’t change were Mr. Bytes and the night guard. Bytes didn’t change because he only thought about himself and only focused on making money and didn’t care what John’s health was like. When John fell in France, Mr. Bytes just got down and said get up. Mr. Bytes didn’t treat John very well, he would hit him if he did something wrong. Now the night guard didn’t change either, when he first saw him, he knew what he was gonna do. The night guard went down to the bar and started selling spots to go see John and he would do this every night just to make money. He didn’t care about anyone else except himself, because he trashed John’s room and poured alcohol on him and stole the picture of Ms. Kendal.

One of the changes that I saw Mr. Marrick went through his talking. When Mr.Merrick was first a patient at the hospital he wasn't talking to anyone, even when Mr. Treves talked to him. Mr. Treves started to talk to John a little more and ask him questions. Mr. Treve’s boss wanted to talk to him so when John talked to Mr. Treve’s boss didn't say a whole lot and was quiet and kinda hard to hear. Then when both Mr. Marrick and his boss left the room John started to say verses from the Bible. Then Mr. Treves asked him how he could read and John said that he read the whole Bible and even has a favorite verse. After that John would start to speak a little more and could understand him a little bit more. Another change that I saw John go through was his confidence. I think his confidence grew when he talked to Mr. Treve’s wife. John even started to cry because he said that it was the first beautiful lady to ever not scream and run away from him and actually had a conversation with him. Another change was that at the start of the film he didn’t feel like a human, instead he felt like an animal. Then at the end of the film he started to feel like a human. At the train station when he was cornered by all the people he started to yell “I am a human being.” Another time when you can tell that he was starting to feel like a human was when he was at the theater for the first time.

It basically kept going back and forth in the movie depending on the part during the movie. At the beginning of the movie when they are introducing the people basically John's introduction was dehumanizing him like the people were. Since he was in the circus like an ‘animal’ since he was behind curtains saying the elephant man. Which already horrible name I think the one he was given was good but alright. HIm being the way he was born they automatically claim that he isn’t normal to whom they decided what was and wasn’t considered normal. It is a social construct to make people feel out of place like they do not belong like they should go out of their way to change themselves for the society's satisfaction. A good example of this is the Kardashians, all of them getting plastic surgery to change themselves because they didn’t feel good enough the way they were born. I think them having John being introduced that way made us realize how much better he was being treated by Treves. Especially the change in the nurses perspectives and treating him as he should. He was coming out of his shell showing how they were treating him really had an effect on him; he broke down just because Treves' wife was treating him like a guest. Which he was. He has never been considered or put as such so he is flooded with emotions because he can actually start to feel comfortable in his own skin. I think the parts where John gets attacked are basically tortured by those people who paid to see him. To which he was shocked to the core and caught off guard not knowing what to do. I think everyone including me was uncomfortable with that scene. At least someone who is empathetic in some way would feel bad for him. Being able to put yourself in someone else’s perspective. Who knows what was going through his head when that was happening or in just so much shock that he couldn’t move or say anything. From us getting to know him and seeing him being treated like he should be to completely turning it around again to him being with bytes again then to Treves than back to Bytes. Once he was back in Bytes hands the point probably being it going back and forth and seeing him develop and open up to not being a bad person whatsoever. So automatically the point of that being the audience wants to see him be able to live normally and not in a place he isn’t even given a bed. Whether he can sleep right or not Mr. Treves gave him enough pillows so he can be somewhat comfortable sleeping upright or in a ball like he did. TO make it more effective I think they show people change in the movie and help him escape from Bytes so he can get on that boat then just get more tortured To than have a good evening in his first time in the theater like the same night or at least with in 48 hours of him returning from the villain of this story.

One big change in the movie is how John is preserved in the eye of the public and in the eye of the hospital. At the beginning of the film he was dressed and rags and was made to look like a monster and then people just saw and treated him as such. With how he was dressed and the environment he was in (carnival) it was hard for most people to see him as a human or man with feelings, literary skills, heart, and a mind of his own. He wasn't seen as human because most people only saw a monster that resembled to be nothing short of a mistake from God himself. However, when Mr.T was made aware that such a person was existing he did what any doctor and man of science and medicine would do and decided to see for himself. When he first looks at John you can see the horror in his eyes with a tear. He then proceeds to pay bites to examine him like an animal and show him to the group, pointing out all of his many deformities and imperfections. However, further into the film he sees him more and more as a person as John shows him and the head of the hospital that he can think and speak for himself and isn't just a wall that doesn't hear or think. John shows him more and more kindness and makes him feel like a human and brings others along the way that treat him as a human and man both things that John wasn't used to at all. Yet one man that worked there only saw profit in taking John and showing him off, many times hurting him in the process almost always hurting him in one way or another such as hurting him mentally with the teasing and mirror and with physical violence. John still goes on however to show others that he is capable of having intelligent conversations and being skilled with paper despite his faulty hand. One person, in particular, made a huge difference in his life and started the fire. None other than a famous celebrity that was interested in his case and had a true heart of gold and genuinely called John a friend. She gave him books and photos but by far took him to the theater and gave him his last truly happy day.

There were a lot of people that changed in this movie. Also, a lot of people that didn’t change and I will be telling you both. Also, be talking about how people accept him as a person and not a monster or freak. First I will be talking about the people that actually changed toward John Merrick. The first person I will talk about is the head nurse. In the beginning, when John came to the hospital she told Dr. Treves that it was a bad idea that he stay there just the fact that he wouldn’t be good and also because of the other nurses. The head nurse changed because she knew in her mind that he is a good person and she would have lost that battle and she would have to watch over him. But she got to know him and likes him. The other nurse really likes having him around. Dr. Treves was really good to them all the time and let people in to come to see him and talk to him. The headmaster changed big in the movie because he didn’t even want them there, just the fact John would scare the other people in the hospital. He changed because now he wants him there because John made the biggest impact on that hospital. The people that didn’t change at all because were Bytes and the night's watchman. Bytes would try and steal John and use him for money. The watchman did the same thing because he would have people pay him and let them in his room. The best part about this movie is the end of it when the people in the theater accepted him and made him feel like a normal person.

Change can be hard or it can be easy. In the beginning of this film everyone does not like John and they get scared every time they see him. Bytes, the “evil” guy that “owned” John liked to just show him off and let people make fun of him. Bytes would beat him for no reason, his reasons were like he stayed out too long when doctor Treves had him. Bytes beat him with his cane because he fell over from getting tortured and he fell over because he was tired and in pain. Bytes would always get drunk and that’s usually when he beat John up. Doctor Treves came by and saw that John needed help. Treves knew that he needed to get John away from Bytes because he knew that Bytes was beating him and treating him like an animal. Treves knew he was not an animal and Treves wanted to try and help him as much as he could before he died. Once Treves got a hold of him, he felt at home and he had his own apartment. Treves treated him with respect and treated him like he was the best person in the world. I personally think that he deserves the world because he is not like anyone else. Once Treves got John he treated him like he was his own son and he got him breakfast every morning. Treves got him as many pillows as he needed to get comfortable because he could not lay on his back or else he would die. Treves gave him everything that he needed to survive. At first when Treves got John no one liked him at the hospital, everyone thought that he should not be in the attic because he was a incurable patient. Treves knew he was going to die he just didn’t know when. Treves treated his as much as he could before he passed. The head nurse and Treves boss didn’t think that John was good enough to be in ithe hospital and they hated on Treves for the longest time because they didn’t think that John should be in the hospital. After a while the head nurse and Treves boss gave John and Treves a chance and let John stay. After a while they enjoyed his company because Treves taught him everything he needed to know to be in the hospital. Treves taught him how to talk again. The nurse and Treves boss treated him the same way that Treves treated him.

I think the theme of change is seen throughout the movie. The hero of the story, John Merrick, is mistreated and paraded around in a circus. He is abused, malnourished, and neglected except when it comes to temporary monetary gain. Later on, he is found out by a certain Dr. Treeves and is brought to a hospital to be cared for. This signifies one of the first changes, a change in environment. Another change is when John is having an evaluation by the owner of the hospital he was residing at. He trips and stumbles on his words multiple times, even at one point merely repeating the same phrase over and over. The head of the hospital sees the interview as a waste of time and leaves, which means Dr. Treeves most likely won't be able to have Mr. Merrick at the hospital anymore. It's in this moment that Mr. Merrick, in his isolation, begins reciting parts of Psalms that Treves himself didn't teach him. It's then that they realize Mr. Merrick didn't lack the ability to speak, he instead lacked the confidence. As he got more confident, he became a charming man who wouldn't be afraid to speak his mind, which contrasts with his usual timid nature, a change in demeanor. The last example I can think of is the theatre scene. In the thetre scene, Mr. Merrick, along with Mr. Treeves and his Wife, attend a play. After the play, they have a toast for Mr. Merrick. He hesitates for a moment, but finds the confidence to stand up in front of the crowd. The audience claps for him, a standing ovation. Mr. Merrick throughout the movie has generally been looked at as a spectacle, a disgusting horrid sight, or even a person to pity. Now, it should go without saying that it was truly terrible the fact that he was perceived in these type of ways and that the negative treatment he recieved was unjust. Although some characters learned to respect him and saw potential in him, such as Treeves and Mrs. Kendal, others understandably pitied him, such as Mrs. Treeves. To perceive someone as pitiful could at times be a negative thing, empathy is natural thing to humans and we will feel sad for someone elses pain but sometimes our pities just brings to light the negative feelings they might feel towards their living situation. It’s at the theatre that one of the most important changes happen, people no longer view him as a spectacle or a monster, they no longer pity, they simply are grateful for his presence and respect him, a change in perception.

At the beginning of the movie John was being treated as a freak of nature and being showed off as like an animal but in reality, he is just like everyone else but in a different way. The change occurred when Dr. Treeves actually helped him get a place to stay and have him at the hospital, it took some time for everyone at the hospital to agree and like him but they were able to have him stay until Bytes came to see him again and then things turned out bad again. Bytes put him in a cage with monkeys because Bytes was a drunken man who doesn't know what he's doing and then went off to somewhere else and Mr. Treeves didn't know where he was, but John is a memorable person who will not be forgotten and will always be remembered as John Merrick to me and not the Elephant Man.

the change we see in the elephant man is that he learns to love himself and feel happy. it's sad that he did but with everyone in his life calling him a freak and a monster you would lose interest in loving yourself too. wouldn't you? don't you think it's sick that he had to live like an animal just because of the way he looked. it's sticking to see things like this happen and they are just going to happen over and over until someone stands up and fights for people like him.

When I think of a first-time elephant man I think it going to be half man and half elephant. When I saw the movie the first time it made me scared but watching the movie. The elephant man can not understand anything in the beginning. The Doctor finds out there is an elephant man and he sees for the first time he feels so sad he wants to help him. The doctor understands how he feels he helped him. When the doctor helped him feel much better and he was an understanding a lot of things and he made a lot of new friends.

in the movie of the Elephant man there had been many changes, John Merrick was being treated poorly. he was treated like an animal and called a freak. John was used to making money for his owner. John Merrick's owner would beat him while he was in a drunken rage. John was so scared and wouldn't talk to anyone. Dr. Treaves found him and took him to the hospital. At first, no one liked him at the hospital, and had to be in the attic because of how he looked. Dr. Treaves got him everything he needed while he was in the hospital. The only person who could get him to start talking again was Dr. Treves. Dr. Treves was his first friend and treated him like a normal person. another person who was a friend to john was the nurse. The nurse was the first female person not to scream after looking at John. John was given his own apartment was able to feel like a normal human again

Change as I noticed it throughout the film was the way John was treated. In the beginning, he was treated like a circus animal, used for shows, bossed around, and kept locked up. Bytes, the man who owned John, would beat John and only use him to make money. It wasn’t until Treves took in John that his treatment began to change, though it was minimal at the time. Treves was the first to treat John as more of a person, showing him respect and trying to communicate with him. We see John grow as a character as this goes along, he goes from only making a few noises, to opening up and actually speaking complete sentences, showing that he was a lot smarter than everyone anticipated. He becomes comfortable after a while, as more and more people begin to respect him. The main nurse initially didn’t like John, but after a while stuck up for him and wanted to help as much as possible. I feel like all this really shows the change that happened throughout the film.

John merrick otherwise known as “the elephant man” was at first dehumanized and he let that society opinion consume him to the point where he would conceal his whole body pretty much all the time. He knew that he was actually smart, knowing how to read and having to create an architectural miniature model of the cathedral without any drawing or any true knowledge of its full characteristics at the beginning. He starts to show his intelligence to the workers at the hospital because of what is called modernly common decency, but back then views were obviously different on when to use that. For example Treves was nice to him from the beginning, it took the nurses a while but they eventually started to treat him nice too. He showed everyone that he may be different but is still human. Change is hard for a lot of people to do,but with motivation, attitude and in this case a better atmosphere you can change and become something better. Everyone goes through pain. It is just a matter of will you grow from it or will you sit and weep in it. John sat in it for a long time because it was forced on him to be weak constantly and not be shown any sign of light, but when treves showed up that changed because someone showed him that there is light in the cruel dark world he was living in. if not for treves John would have been stuck in the same dark cave he was in. he had no real meaning before treves when treves came into his life he gave john hope for himself because he had never experienced a look that was not scared or frightened other than bytes and the kid. When people dehumanize someone they are showing that the person they are dehumanizing is not equal in any way or form. Merrick could do tasks, work, socialize, dress accordingly, and have respect for others, but most importantly he showed that he had heart. If you ask me being able to show those key things means that you are human. In my view god creates everyone the way they are in the most perfect way he can. Decisions are what makes people seem imperfect to everyone else. Take someone who is a criminal for example, they were not created to do things that way they created their life based on the decision to do those things. If we were to use a person for example lets use the guy from texas for the coffee bean presentation and speech. He chose to do those things…..but he changed and became who he was meant to be. John was created in that way because he was chosen to change societies opinion, people saw him as a monster, but when he changed he got people to see who he was originally supposed to be. People base who other people are on physical appearance, but they need to take a better interest in personality rather than just looks.
