I think he has a good heart to go with good intentions because the night he was going to kill Doyle, he told Frank and his mother to go stay with his mother's friend. Karl had good intentions because he treated the mom, boy, and Karl all poorly. He would call Karl names, he would sometimes hit Frank, and he would also talk badly to the mother. He was rude to the mother's friend who worked at the dollar store with her, he made fun of him and would make mean jokes about him.
I think that karal is a good guy and he wants to protect the kid and doesn't want anything to happen to the kid. he is thinking really hard on what he should do to this guy. if doyal was going to hurt the kid Karl did not want he around the kid so he prevented that fun happening.
I think we can tell he has a good heart by how he is with Frank, Linda, Vaughn, and everyone else. He only does what he thinks is right, and does it to protect the people he loves. He treats them with respect, he acts like a father to Frank, and a loving friend to Linda, he isn't mean to Vaughn for being gay, and he puts up with Doyle until he no longer can. You get to see what it kind of is like inside his head, he doesn't lie about he feels, he tells the truth, and he believes that God will still love him for him, even though he has sinned, he has sinned in a way that he feels was doing more good than bad. Karl Childers name kind of shows how he still is a child at heart, even though he's done some growing up, he never really got to be a kid much. Also, Doyle Hargraves, I think that name shows he's kind of a rude person and that when he dies not very many people will care. Frank and Linda Wheatley their names kind of show that they are these nice, happy, loving mother and son who do a great deal to do good in life, and have been through some stuff that isn't easy to go through, but they toughed it out. They are kind of these people who they are good, and they’ll lend a hand, like they did with Karl, and they’ll accept you for who you are, like they did with Karl, and they won’t push for you to tell them things, because they know it’s personal and you'll let it out when you're ready.
Throughout the movie Sling Blade, there are multiple ways that you can tell that there are multiple ways Karl Childers has a caring heart. When Karl gets out of the institution and is exploring the world again, he runs into a young boy named Frank who is toting around his laundry that had just been washed and Karl immediately offers to lend him a hand on carrying them back to his house. After that Karl doesn't want to stay out in the world anymore as he thinks, so he goes back to the institution and wants to stay there still. Even though his offer is declined he gets a place to stay for the night. In the morning when Karl is about to leave, the homeowner comes to wake him up but he is already awake sitting at the edge of the bed. This shows that Karl did not want to mess up the young girl's bed. Another way that we can tell that he is a good person is when Doyle pushes Frank and his mom Karl grabs ahold of him and demands that Doyle never lays a hand on them again. During the end, even though it may be interpreted that Karl is a bad guy, he kills Doyle. Though it may make him look bad I believe the real reason behind Karl slaughtering Doyle is that Linda and Karl talked about no matter how hard they tried to escape Doyle's rath, he would always find out where they were. So the reason I think this part shows that Karl has a good heart is that he is trying to end Frank and Linda's suffering being with Doyle. There are multiple other ways that Karl is shown in the film as a loving and caring person but I just listed and explained a few. -Riley Larson Applied English 12 Pd.4
I think he has a good heart because he cares for Frank and his mom. He finds a job right away when he gets out. He tries to get his life back together. Karl goes back to his childhood house and looked where he slept and found his dad and talked to him. I think that they chose Karl Childers is because his last name fits his personality. Doyle Hargraves last name describes him really well because he is really mean to people and he should be put in a grave.
Keisha Felcher. We can tell that Karl has a good heart because or else he would have done something to Frankie and Linda but he didn’t because his bond with them grew stronger and stronger because he cares about them a lot. Karl also just got out of the mental hospital, so he probably wants to make peace with his problems and to try not to mess it up. But when Doyle starts insulting people and throwing or pushing around Linda and Frankie than that means that Karl is going to want to get up in there because he doesn’t like it that Doyle treats Frankie and Linda like that and how he talks to them. He is also really good to the boy Frankie. He talks to him, helps him carry stuff, and he probably plays games with him too. He probably also doesn’t want to be seen as that guy that got out and went into killing people again unless it was something bad that set him off then he would, for example, what he did to Doyle.
karl has one big heart and it shows in the movie a lot. Starting off with the beginning of him telling a story to the interview lady about his childhood growing up. He has said that he thought the young boy making love to his mother was hurting his mother and thought it was the right thing to do to help out. The only thing that makes me think is that he killed his mother, I wanna say it is about that he killed her for no reason other than trying to get rid of her for cheating on his father. Karl is one nice man the little boy named Frankie. Frankie and Karl have become best friends and Karl would do anything to save that boy and his mother for being so nice. Carl is good to everyone that isn't harming people but is just trying to help out and be nice to people that are helping him. The names are interesting, Karl Childers, Name is interesting has a mind of both a teen in some little aspects and yet still has a full-fledged brain of an adult, thus the last name Childers in my mind. For Doyle, Doyle is just a bad guy so why not put a bad annoying name in for a man that is just a jerk and doesn't like to treat anyone else other than himself with good workmanship, pride, and love. Franky and his mother's names are normal names for being normal people in this movie that help people out.
Karl Childers is a good man. He is good at heart in the purest and best way possible. You could say he is like a child but he is not a spoiled one. During the entire length of the movie money did not matter to him, and he only asked for a couple of things. He asked for a place to sleep, and a few times he asked for a minimal amount of food. He is pure at heart because he cared for people far more than they cared for him at least until he met Frank. Karl had no ill intentions for anyone in the movie except for a few specific people. These people would be Dixon's son and Doyle Hargraves. Dixon was the son of Karls boss. Dixon was very deviant and maligned with social norms of the time and cared little for the feelings of others. He was selfish and only cared for himself. The same could be said about Doyle Hargraves who has an interesting name. I believe his name symbolizes a few words. Doyle "Har" "Hard" "Grave" Hargaves is an evil and nasty character indeed. Har could symbolize that he thinks everything is a joke and that he is the one telling them, hard suggests that he is unloving or hard skinned. Grave is almost self explanatory. Karl Childers also has a interesting symbolic name. Childers, it sounds like child. Karl as I had already explained acts as though he is a kid still, looking not for money nor fame. He wanted happiness but was humble enough, and kind enough to sacrifice his for those he cared about in the end of the movie.
You can tell that karl has good intentions with what he does because he is only trying to protect those that show forth love towards him. Karl never really truly tried to hurt anyone. Karl spent the majority of his life in metal house because he had killed his mother and frank because he thought he was hurting his mother he didn't know that she gave consent. Even tho i have yet to finish the whole movie i can predict what is possible to happen in it. Karl will do something to doyle harm him because he is hurting the ones that has showed love towards. Even tho karl is special doesn't mean he is not able to comprehend or do thing that the everyday person does. Karl knows he messed up in the passed and doesn't want to repeat it again. He always has good intentions on what he says and does and never means no harm until he's someone putting forth harm towards someone. Karl doesn't seem like he doesn't know too much about the real world just knows the things that he grew up with like rebuilding small engines that something his well skilled at and it allowed him to get a job when he got out of the mental hospital. If karl wouldn't have been able to find work i feel like he would have wound up dying or committing another crime to whind him back in the mental hospital right where he was as if he never left.

Karl was born in a barn most of his childhood and he didn’t really know anything like which is good and bad. Like one night his mom and dad gave him a baby that he couldn’t raise him because of the situation he's at also did not have an idea how to raise it. But he had good intentions and he empties out a box where his tools were in and put him in there and buried him instead of just barring the baby. Another thing is he saw his mom getting in trouble by this kid that had his way with her so Karl thought it would be a good idea to just hit him so he can’t hurt his mother anymore. Then his mother actually didn’t care and said the look of what you have done so Karl realized she is very awful and hit her too. Lastly, after he got of the mental hospital he found this boy and actually started to care for him and his family so towards the end of the move he decided to kill Doyle to keep the boys' mother and the boy safe from him. So Doyle can’t hurt them again. That family took really good care of him and made him biscuits with gravy it's like the family he never had before and his dad never cared for him before or never.
Karl Childers is like the name Billy Bob Thornton it sounds like someone isn't very smart or bright. Doyle Hargraves sound like a bully name in my opinion and seems he had a hard life and treated everyone was close with like crap and maybe didn’t know how to treat anyone kind and he was always drunk. Charles Bushmen is very evil. He reminds me of a person that likes making people very miserable and killing people which he know that isn’t good at all. He got to live his life, unlike Karl. That's why Karl got out sooner than him. He should stay in the mental hospital for life. The boy named Frank is just a kid and he been through hard things through his life that he shouldn't experience for example like his father died by not providing for his family. Hopefully, when he grows up he’ll be happy and do good at life. Linda is the mother of Frank and she also had a hard life with her husband dying and afraid of being lonely that's why she has Doyle. Karls father seems like he’s losing it and doesn't have any son named Karl. Jerry is the helper for Karl when he got out of the hospital. He likes helping people. He got him a job and a place to stay at.
I can tell Karl Childers has a good heart because he cares about Frank and his mom Lina. He wouldn’t do anything to hurt them he cares about them way too much to do hurt them. He cares about frank more he cares about anyone else he like being around them. Lina and Vaughan make Karl welcome. They like Karl being around during the movie frank said likes Karl he makes him feel comfortable around him. How I can tell Karl Childers has a good heart and good intentions he likes caring about people if they care about him. One example is the fixed Linda’s washer machine and how he cares about Frank and he’ll do anything for him. He cares how about others even if they did him wrong likes how his dad treated him wrong when Karl was younger and he went back and told he would cut his lawn for free. Karl Childers is a good man he cares about other people when they treat him with no respect he went to the Bible and decides there’s and he learned that hurting others isn’t a good idea. He learned from his mistakes and he knows what’s right and wrong what I like about Karl Childers is he cares about people before he cares about himself.
Karl Childers, I think it’s a unique name and cares about other people.
Doyle Hargraves, I think of that name and I think of a person that only cares about himself and no one else in their life. He likes to get drunk and no care about other people’s feelings.
I think he has a good heart because he cares for Frank and his mom. He finds a job right away when he gets out. He tries to get his life back together. Karl Childers has a good heart because he would help anyone if they needed help. The proof in this is that he carried franks wash home with him leaving behind his fries. Karl is the nicest person ever he took Doyle's life to give frank and his mom a better life and he gives them all the wages he was saving up from his job and he would stingily spend his money in the movie. Even more, proof that he's the nicest person ever is that he even offered to mow his dad's lawn even after he abused him till the age of 12. He tried to cheer up frank's mom when Doyle put her down and left the house in a drunk ramble. He told frank that he loved him and that he was proud of him and then left and made him a bookmark to remember him by . he makes it so frank had something to feel safe when he was at home so Doyle wouldn't hit him. Doyle was a manipulative person and made it so frank mother think that she had nothing better and was breaking her down making her more and more depressed and more willing to let him abuse her because he made it so it seemed like it was her fault for being abusive.doyle must have had a bad home life when he was a kid you would have to think because if he was raised in a good home he wouldn't have been like that he probably had an abusive dad. Something I personally found to be interesting about the movie Sling Blade was that Frank, his mother Linda, and Vaughan were among some of the kindest characters in the movie. While the man who provided Karl with a job would also buy him food, and provide him a place in the shop to sleep these still are not suitable living conditions for anybody. Only Frank and Linda took him in and treated him like family. Vaughan was also very nice to him, but it took him a little bit to become nice to him because Karl staying with Frank and Linda made him nervous for their safety. For the first time ever Karl wasn’t only treated as a person, but he was also treated like family. I found it interesting how the nicest characters in the movie consisted of a child, a woman, and a gay man. It seemed like no straight adult male was true as kind as a gay man, a young boy, or a woman. It’s good to be smart enough to see past stereotypes, but the fact of the matter is that most stereotypes wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t any truth behind them. Vaughan is definitely the stereotypical gay man in a sense that he is extremely feminine for a man, but the fact that he is feminine may be the reason why he is able to sympathize for Karl, unlike most men can. Vaughan’s feminine perception gives him a motherly instinct that most straight men do not have. Linda is caring and motherly towards Karl because she is already a mother and she is also a woman, and Frank still has the childlike innocence that grown men do not which makes him care for Karl. The innocence that Frank has and the motherly and feminine qualities that both Linda and Vaughan have is what makes them able to see past Karl’s disability and is what also makes them able to care for him. Frank is smart enough to understand that Karl lives with a disability, but Frank is young and even though he’s been put through some hard times with his family at a young age he is still too young to understand how big the world is so I don’t think Frank is able to sympathize for Karl because of his disability. On the other hand, Frank and Linda are adults and they’re old enough to understand the how big the world is, so they’re able to sympathize more for Karl which is probably why they took him under their wing. -Joseph Wardlow
I think he has a good heart because he gets out and tries to find a job and get his life together. He also has a heart because he showed he cared to make Frank happy. He showed he cared when Doyle disrespected frank.

In the beginning of the story when he is telling the story on why he was where he was to the interview lady about his childhood growing up. He said that he thought the young boy making love to his mother was hurting his mother and thought it was the right thing to do to help out so instead of taking care of it in different manners he killed the little boy jesse in order to protect his mom. Karl Childers has a good heart because he would help anyone if they needed help. He cares for Frank and his mom. He finds a job right away when he gets out. He tries to get his life back together. Karl goes back to his childhood house and looked where he slept and found his dad and talked to him.

I say yes that Karl is someone with good intentions and heart. For starters he had the good intentions to protect the people he cares about and also good intentions to try to reconnect with his father and another thing was that he had intentions to help frank and his family and that shows that he has a good heart. Another way to show he has a good heart was the way he was with frank he was like a friend or father to him and that shows that he cares about him. Also to show that he has a good heart he helped frank and his mother by giving them some money to help then out and another way he helped them was by getting rid of doyle because he was a awful person who was never going to changed and karl saw that and thought that he had to get rid of him so even though that seems like it was a bad thing what he did it was for a very good reason to help those people. So in conclusion i definitely think that Karl is someone that has a very good heart with good intentions to help people.
How we can tell that carl has a good is because when he heard his mother screaming in the house. He went to go save his mother even no they didn’t want anything to do with him. When he meets the little kid he offered help to carry laundry to his house and not that many people would do that. I think he has good intention because when the boyfriend tried to hit the little boy carl stop him from hitting him and he really likes the little boy so when the boy says he wants him out of his life carl acted on that he wants the little boy to be happier so he took the stress out of his life so he would feel better and him and his mother could live in peace by themselves. When he was working at the mechanic shop he always helped people he never denied to help them and he always fixes the thing that he was working on. At the beginning of the movie, he answered some questions for the newspaper and he wanted to let them know what he did in the past. He always fixed things for the family and he didn’t tell them he just fixed them. Jerry Woolridge is an interesting name to me because Woolridge I think of how you make wool and he lives on the ridge of someplace. Karl Childers is an interesting name because he is still kind of a child in the film even now he has grown up and his name is Childers and Karl is an old name to me and fits perfectly with the movie

I think he has a good heart yes because he only killed Doyle because Doyle was doing wrong to frank and his momma and he is trying to protect them, he also only killed his momma and that boy, Jesse, because he thought Jesse was hurting his mom and then when he found out his mom liked it, he killed her I think because she doing that was hurting his dad even though his dad didn't really care for him. -zoie hite
