I think that the main idea of this entire film is having us see it from a different perspective. you see it from a lot of different perspectives throughout the film. I think the purpose of this is to see how Joseph is being treated and how he is affected by such actions. For example him being asked repeatedly by a little kid why his head is so big. Surprised John didn’t just hit him with his cane. Maybe a little brutal I guess that wouldn’t have given him better treatment anyhow. I think the part where Treves is saying that he is making John a circus act just as much as Bytes was he was not completely off because he showed him to the doctors but did help him be comfortable and made him satisfy with his life in some ways just by treating him like John not the Elephant man. I do not understand why they would have the movie go back and forth so much with it not going in John's favor to it going to johns favor then not then yes then not. A hell of a rollercoaster I’ll tell ya. It could be just because they wanted us to be affected and just as upset as Treves and John was when it was happening or at least someone who cares about others emotions would be an empath. Some would say. Not everyone would get it and connect to it in that way. I think the fact that Treves at one point where John was staying wasn’t a secret he should ‘ve moved him into a different room especially after Bytes got him again. To then get him again legitimately did not make sense I guess you could look the other way if he can find him he can find him again. The queen also made a statement where it said where he was and the newspaper as well. So who knows if that second time Bytes got to him that it would’ve been stopped just by having John transfer into another room. There was at one point during the film I think everyone is with me when I say there was at least one scene that made them uncomfortable. It is in a way a point of the film. We all saw who John could become once he was treated like John. Than when he was treated like the Elephant man it clicked how badly he was getting treated. How it affected him mentally and physically. The sense that did it to me was when that employee exploiting him to make a profit off him by taking strangers into the hospital room where he was residing to see him. Very much disturbing not to mention that one perverty in that group was groping all the ladies or at least those two made them kiss can’t imagine how hard it was to film the movie especially for the actor who played John got first hand of what it’s like to be seen as mostly a profit and going through that emotional rollercoaster of people treating you like a person to just an act in the circus if you get what I mean by that. The thing that I’m going to talk about first is the tie-ins with The Elephant Man and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. The tie-ins that they both have are stressful themes, dark tones, and issues that happened around the world back then for disabled people. The characters in both films can relate to each other because it has a guy who thinks he’s alone and he’s not human and everything changes when a guy comes into his life, teaches him everything, helps him deal with people, and how to feel like a human being instead of an animal and object. The main ideas for the two films are changing audiences/moviegoers' hearts, learning acceptance, contributing, and beauty on the inside of disabled people. The films always give me a reminder of this quote, “Look weak, you’re strong. Look strong, you’re weak.” What this quote means is that both John and Chief stayed silent and made the people think that they’re weak and they have to deal with them or anything, but when they’re not around both of them come up with a plan to escape and act smart whenever the time is needed necessarily. Since, I’ve talked about that quote as a bonus, the strengths and weaknesses of the characters are going to be talked about. Let’s start with Chief’s strengths and weaknesses. The strength he has is heavy lifting, coming up with plans, and fooling the guards, but I think his weakness is being alone. For John’s strength, he can remember a lot of quotes and come up with speeches. His weakness to me is the same as Chiefs; being alone. The one that I choose to be the best is One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. The reason why I think it is, is because it just gives me an unforgettable score, helps me a lot better with the act structure, and has a little bit of heart warmth and fun for me.

What is the main idea of The Elephant Man(1980)? Well, first let me put in my thoughts of the film first before we get to the main question of this blog task. In my honest opinion, I do think this film was a very intriguing and interesting watch from beginning to end. From the moment when the film began with its soundtrack till the very trippy dream-like sequence before the credits roll was a fascinating ride all the way through. We really see how traumatizing it is to see someone like Joseph(John) Merrick. It was horrifying the first time we see him, hiding in the shadows, not really getting any good look at him till a bit later one during the first act where we finally see him on screen. It was very touching to see John actually get help from Dr. Treves and other members of the staff in the hospital, and once people start to see how brilliantly minded he is and how much of a human he shows under all those deformities is very touching and downright wholesome at times to see people truly see who he really is.

I give the film a very solid 9/10

Now onto the main question, the stems wanted me to answer. What is the main idea behind the film? In my personal opinion. I think it's about growing to accept those who are different than you. We see a few times in the film about how people first reacted to John Merrick but over time they start to understand and get to know him better till they accept him as a human being. We see Treves genuinely try to help and get others to know John as a person, not as some stage attraction. We see the staff first horrified then starting to like John as he is, not what others made him out to be.

The main idea of The Elephant Man is to show what Joseph Merrick’s life was like with the disability he had. You could see that his life wasn’t easy, he was used for money and everyone would call him an animal or freak. But later in the narratology, he says “I am not an animal”, “I am a human”. What I think causes Mr. Bytes to pay for a tour by the night guard to see how Joseph is doing and to steal him, so he can make more money again. I think he also steals him because he went a long time with no income and he was building up anger each day and finally couldn’t contain it. I still don’t understand why Joseph didn’t tell Dr. Treeves that every night there are people coming by his window. If he said something then they could’ve caught onto the night guards tours a lot faster and they could’ve moved Joseph into a new room away from the ally or whatever they went to see his window.

I think that the cuckoo's nest and the elephant man has somewhat of similarity as in someone is different and they can't do anything to change it like with john Marik he can't change the way he looks but that was not his fault almost the same way as Mcmerphy he a little different becous of who he is and how he acts. but over time they start to change from something that was not good to something better than most others.

in a way, this helps me understand we are not, all the same, some people got problems that we can help but sometimes we can't help but we are different in our own ways.

Joseph Merrick and Frederick Treves are similar and I will talk about it in a bit. When are the strengths and weaknesses of Joseph Merrick and I will talk about this right after I talk about why they are similar? How does Joseph Merrick tie in with what we have learned before and I will be talking about this after the strengths and weaknesses? Now I will talk about why Joseph Merrick and Frederick Treves are similar. I believe that they are similar because they both love helping people that need to be helped. Also, they love the theater and reading books. Now I will talk about the strengths and weaknesses of Joseph Merrick. He has a lot of strengths because he is strong about everything that happens to him. He knows what he is talking about and how he is a very good reader and how he knows how to recite the books he read. His weaknesses are how he looks and how he can’t smile at all. Another weakness is that he can’t use his whole left side of his body. He can’t use his left leg and can’t use his left arm. Now I will be talking about how Joseph Merrick ties in with what we have learned before. That is when we learned about how they were all treated differently in the time eras. It was bad for him because of the way he looked. He was called a freak and a monster.

What do you think causes John to gain confidence? I think the reason why John grows in confidence is because of Mr. Treves. Mr. Treves Is helping John by letting him stay at the hospital so he is not with the other guy who was using him for money. He would take him the freak shows to gain money from people. When Treves was saying that he is like Bytes by making him a circus act because he was showing John to all of the doctors. But I don’t think that they are alike because Treves made John feel like a person and not like an object to be shown at the circus. He was also John's friend. One scene that I didn’t like was when that one group went into John’s room at night and started to break things and hurt him. They trashed his room. In that scene Bytes also kidnapped John and took him to freak shows again so he can get more money. The best scene is when John went into the theater for the first time. Everyone there would see him and applaud him. I think when Treves was showing John to all of the other doctors is when Treves started to think he was just like Bytes.

How are Treves and Bytes alike? I think that these two are alike by what they think and what they are doing to John. I think that they both know that he is dying but still torcher him.
What is the main idea of this film? I think the main idea of this film is that people with disabilities and people with other features than you should be treated the same as every other person. I think that they should not be beaten to death. I do not think people should put them up for show or for their own good. I think that these people should be taken care of like what Treves was trying to do.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of this film? There are a lot of stretches and weaknesses in this film. I will start with the strengths. One strength of this film is that Treves tries to help John as much as he can before John passes away. He tries to see and exam him to see how this has happened to John. Another strength is people start to like him for him and start to grow with him and talk with him and they are not forced to. Some of the weaknesses are that when people look at him they get scared. Another weaknesses is that Bytes only has John for show and for money. Bytes beats John for dumb reasons. Bytes keeps him locked up and never lets him have a life.
What do you think causes John's problems that he has? I feel bad for John, but I think that his mom got rapes by the elephant while she was pregnant with John. The cells did weird things and the egg got messed up and it made John look half elephant and half human.
Which one is the best doctor and why? I think that Treves is the best doctor for John because he is a doctor and knows what he is doing. He knows what John has and he tries to give him as much as he can before he passes. Treves knew he was not going to last long so Treves gave him the best life that he could have before he went. What do you still not understand about the film? I still really don’t understand how or why she was out with the elephants in the middle of a field. She should have not been out there she should have been home. Unless she got into an argument with Johns dad and ran off. I don’t know how the cells and the egg got messed up and formed a half elephant and half human. I wonder what happen to the mom and dad. I wonder if they passed also or not. I want to know how John got on his own without his parents. I wonder if they gave him up or he snuck out of the house because he thought that his parents would not love him the same if he was all human.

Overall I thought the movie was pretty good but the thing that I disliked the most was the way Joeseph Merrick was getting treated by the guard and bytes it just didn't feel right, but Mr. Treves came in and started working with him and Joseph actually got him to talk but he always could and just never really could because of the way Bytes was treating him. After Mr. Treves got him situated in the hospital he loved it there and thinking that he wouldn't leave and stayed there and was taken care of, well the guard decided to throw a little "party" and used him as an object pretty much and the people that were all in that room could've killed him, he could have died in his room that night. I'd say Mr. Treves and Joesph Merrick are similar because they both are humans, they both care for the world and both are intelligent people.

What is the main idea of The Elephant Man? The main idea of The Elephant man is how it shows the treatment of people with disabilities and our accidents and are called freaks or monsters. And it shows how one person is able to change how people think about other people and not to judge them based on their looks but on what's on the inside. Because of how people would freak out and judge John instead of who he is and how much he is like other people but with a difference. But when he was with Bytes he was treated poorly and was used to make him the money he didn't care about John he only cared that he was making him money. But when Dr. Treaves finds him and hears about him he wants to try and help John. but It took a while to get bytes to give John to Dr. Treaves because he was his big money maker. after Dr. Treves go him he was able to save him. What do you think causes Bytes to try and get John back? I think Bytes tried to steal John because he wanted to use him for money and didn't care about how John was being taken care of. I believe to bytes was able to get John back I think he would die by bytes or because of a health problem.

How are John Merrick and Mrs.Kendal alike? John Merrick and Mrs.Kendal are both very intelligent and enjoy literary works. They also both really enjoy the works of William Shakespeare.
What is the main idea of The Elephant Man? I think that the main idea of Elephant Man is to not judge someone based on appearance and to realize that potential is still found in anyone no matter what they look like.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of John Merrick? John Merrick’s strengths are that he’s an intelligent, charming, well spoken man with the capacity to have compassion for others. His “weakness” is that he was very timid, he didn’t really open up himself that much to others due to the abuse that he had to suffer through. However, he was able to overcome this “weakness” through the help of new friends and a better environment.
Do you agree or disagree with the statement:”My life is full because I know I am loved.”? I agree with this statement because I believe love is a comforting thing and i believe that it’s even moreso when someone has been deprived of it or has even been shown an egregious amount of it’s opposite, hate. John hasn’t really ecperienced love or appreciation in his life and for him to finally people that seem to care for him and for him to be aware of that, I believe that in that situation, no matter who you are, your heart will truly be satisfied.
What do you still not understand about freak shows? What I still do not understand about freak shows are why they were a thing to begin with. Why were there shows in which people with abnormal qualities were paraded around for entertainment?
What is the main idea of Romeo and Juliet? The main idea of Romeo and Juliet, the book that Mrs.Kendal gives him, is the pointlessness of generational feuds. It’s about forgiveness and how a conflict between two people from their respective families should not have to carry on or be the burden in which their progeny have to endure. It alos explores themes of love and the power it holds, with the love-fueled death of Romeo and Juliet being the event that finally ends the feud between the families.
What is one of the best scenes in The Elephant Man? One of my favorite moments is the ‘i’m not an animal’ scene. John Hurt, the actor who portrayed John Merrick, really showed alot of emotion and distress in this scene and the message that’s being told as he’s calling out the almost casual dehumanizing attitudes the onlookers have is shocking. You have a man just trying to not disturb anyone that’s being relentlessly pursuited by a mob and gawked at just because of his physical appearance.

How are treves and merrick alike? They both see the world as violent to the people of different physical features. They both show that they are human by caring for people who deserve it and showing it to them. If the society was more like it is today john would not have had to wait 90% of his life hiding and not being confident in his own skin. Do I agree with disabilities be rendered useless back then? No because that is messed up and i will explain why. The way they treated the disabled was not ok because they have the same capabilities as us. Whether its working, being into hobbies, having heart, or traveling in public with a smile on their face. We are equal because in the end we all have a heart. Being disabled is not a choice so why would we create a bad enviroment for them? There is not a single valid reason to. Lets take stephen hawking for example, he had a hard life but that did not stop him from doing great things. What do i think is the main idea for this story/film? I think it is change. Why? This is because it is shown throughout the movie creating a perspective that not a lot of people bring to mind every day. Change in attitude against societies hatred and cruelty. Like when merrick started to not be afraid of living in the world anymore. Change in our mind because we see how much words and treatment can affect people. So much damage can cause people to hide and conceal who they are making their life not as successful as they could have been without that treatment.

I think what the narrative is trying to do is show us how different people see Merrick and treves. some people see treves are a hero and others just think he is doing what he is doing to look good. some people see Merrick as a waste of space and want to make him leave or died, others think he should be treated as a normal human being and not as an animal. do you agree or disagree with this statement? "I am not an animal" I agree with him, no he isn't the most handsome man ever but he isn't an animal and shouldn't be treated as one. he is a human being with feelings and emotions. what gets anyone the right to treat him bad just because he isn't good-looking. it doesn't matter if your good looking or not. it matters what you are in the inside. meaning how you treat others and your beliefs. it's his life, not anyone else's, and one day I really how people understand that. the world would be 10 times better if more people saw things like this and didn't bully or harasses them. but let's be honest that is probably never going to happen, why? because they are just too many things that people disagree on. there is no way that every human being can be happy at the same time. no way.

The motive between the 2 characters in the elephant man are both different, joseph wanted to live a normal life and converse with people, who want to meet with him and doc just wanted him to simply not die until he felt good for the human race for him to die of natural causes (he did technically die of natural causes because he died of asphyxiation)

What do you think causes Treves to want to take in John?
I think Treves, at first, wanted to take in John Merrick in order to just study him. He kind of just saw him as an experiment rather than a person. After a while, John Merrick opens up more and more and that’s when Treves begins to treat him differently. I do still believe however that Treves mainly brought John there to run tests on him and maybe even make himself out to have found a fascinating discovery. Maybe he did all that for a little more fame or popularity. As stated though, Treves changed through the course of the film and began to treat John as more of a person than an experiment.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of John Merrick?
John Merrick has many strengths and some weaknesses. His biggest and main weakness is his condition, which isn’t his fault or anything he can change. I call this a weakness because he can’t always have the same social interactions that a person without the condition could have. He can’t change anything about it, though, it isn’t a curable or removable condition. He has to power through and live with it. This brings me to his strengths. John Merrick has many strengths, one being his endurance. John Merrick endures so much on a daily basis for his appearance, but he still keeps his head held up and appreciates whatever good thing happens to him. Another strength of John Merrick is his kindness. Even though he’s gone through so much and been treated so poorly, John Merrick is still extremely kind and caring. He never gets mad or yells at anyone throughout the entire film, even when he is bullied and made fun of. He has a strong will and keeps true to who he is.

How are they alike and different, well i think that frederick treves is just looking and caring for him in the beginning just for research purposes and he really does not care for his well being in life. And he also just wants people to know why he brought him into the ward to “help” him, and later in the movie he shows how much Mr. Merrick means to him by showing him to his wife, and while they were with the wife Mr. merrick asked about his kids and if they were home but treves was hesitant to tell him because he did not want his kids horrified by the “monster” he was caring for and towards the end of the movie you can really see how much of an impact the wart covered, limping, hunched over, bad back, of a monster it had made on treves because when the night watchman came into the room to show him off to the ladies and gents of the bar that night. And when treves found out who did it he stormed into the boiler room and told him he was released and that he should feel bad about his life and how he should feel ashamed about what he has done to mr Merrick, then he goes on to describe to him that he is not a monster that he his a human being with a conscience and a soul.
